Defending champion Laguna Beach girls’ water polo earns top seed in CIF Division 1 playoffs

Laguna Beach High girls’ water polo, the defending CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion, will face a familiar foe as it starts a quest for another ring.

Surf League champion Laguna Beach (26-1), the top seed, hosts Surf League at-large team Los Alamitos (14-13) in a Division 1 quarterfinal match Thursday. The Breakers are going for their fifth Division 1 title in seven years.

Surf League runner-up Newport Harbor (20-7) earned the No. 4 seed in Division 1. The Sailors play Santa Margarita (19-8) in the quarterfinals Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Saddleback College.

In Division 2, Wave League champion Huntington Beach (13-12) plays at Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in a first-round match Wednesday. In Division 4, Wave League runner-up Edison (15-13) hosts Bonita in the first round Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Ocean View High.

Orange Coast League champion Costa Mesa (20-6) earned the top seed for Division 5, and hosts Los Amigos (6-12) in the first round Tuesday. The Lobos tied for third in the Garden Grove League.

Marina (16-11) is the No. 3 seed in Division 6, and the Vikings play at Paloma Valley (11-13) in the first round Tuesday. Orange Coast League runner-up Estancia (18-9) hosts Pacifica (13-14) in another Division 6 first-round match Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at Costa Mesa High.
