College Roundup: UC Irvine drops baseball opener at Fresno State

Jake Palmer had two hits for the UC Irvine baseball team, which dropped its season opener at Fresno State 3-1 on Friday night.

Nate Thimjon and Jeff Jamison homered for the Bulldogs.

Nathan Church scored on a single by Mike Peabody for the Anteaters.

Trenton Denholm got the start for UCI. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Vanguard 4, Park University 2: Kevin Miser reached base three times, scoring a run and knocking in another for the host Lions in the second game of Friday’s nonconference doubleheader.

Elijah Weeks had two runs batted in for Vanguard (9-3). Jakob Farmer threw two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

In the first game, Park won 7-5.

Golden West 15, Bakersfield 4: The host Rustlers pounded out 19 hits in Friday’s nonconference game.

Luke Chung had two hits and three runs batted in for Golden West (6-7). Justin Simpson and Enrique Bennett each drove in two runs.

Logan Gallina had a home run as part of a two-hit performance.

SOFTBALL

Orange Coast 4, Rio Hondo 1: Madison LeClaire had a double and three runs batted in to lead the host Pirates on Friday in a nonconference game.

Caitlyn Sideris had a triple, and Ally Cisneros also had a double for Orange Coast (2-3). Jaelyn Operana allowed just three hits without a run over 5 2/3 innings in the circle.

Orange Coast snapped a three-game losing streak.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Fullerton 81, Orange Coast 52: Jonathan Ileleji had a team-high 17 points to go with four steals for the visiting Pirates on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game.

Andres Ortega added 13 points and four rebounds for Orange Coast (4-22, 1-13 in conference). Aundrel Pua had eight points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard 3, Hope International 0: Kyle Anema had a match-high 22 kills and six block assists to lead the host Lions to a 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 win in a Golden State Athletic Conference match.

Bryce Thompson handed out 38 assists for Vanguard (6-3, 4-1 in conference). Cody Watts and Christian Nowtash each had six kills.

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 9, Imperial Valley 0: The host Pirates improved to 4-3 overall, earning their third victory in their past four matches on Friday in nonconference play.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 7, Imperial Valley 2: The Pirates evened out their record at 3-3 with Friday’s nonconference win at home.
