High School Roundup: Fountain Valley’s Max Wilner places fifth in CIF State wrestling championships

Fountain Valley High junior Max Wilner placed fifth at 160 pounds in the CIF State wrestling championships on Saturday at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Wilner made the podium as a state medalist for the second consecutive season. He went 6-2 in the tournament, including 3-1 in the consolation bracket on the final day of the tournament.

In the fifth-place match, Wilner won by a 5-2 decision over Trent Silva of Windsor, who had previously beaten him in the quarterfinals.

GIRLS’ WRESTLING

Edison’s Angela De La Cruz fell one match short of earning a medal in the CIF State wrestling championships at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Walnut Creek Northgate’s Liv Villanueva pinned De La Cruz in the third period of their blood-round match.

SOFTBALL

Newport Harbor 6, Fullerton 3: McKayla Cotton went three for three with four runs batted in to lead the host Sailors on Saturday in a Savanna Showcase game.

Eliana Gottlieb also had three hits, including a home run, for Newport Harbor (1-3).

Clare Austin allowed three runs over five innings to earn the win in the pitching circle.

Newport Harbor 3, Valencia 2: Lindsey Blanchfield had three hits and drove in a run for the Sailors in their second game of the Savanna Showcase on Saturday.

Kendall Kelly also had two hits, including a double, and a run batted in for Newport Harbor (2-3).

Kat Metcalf allowed one earned run over six innings for the Sailors in the circle.

Edison 4, Hesperia Sultana 1: Hailie Benko had a home run and two runs batted in to lead the host Chargers in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader on Saturday.

Shelby Saffell also had a double, a run driven in, and a run scored for Edison (3-1).

Talia Hannappel went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and five walks. She struck out 10 batters.

Edison 3, Hesperia Sultana 1: Katie Volk had a pair of doubles and two runs scored for the Chargers in the second game of Saturday’s nonleague doubleheader.

Jenna Gordon threw a complete game, allowing one run on a hit and four walks. She struck out 10 in the contest for Edison (4-1).

Huntington Beach 1, Temecula Great Oak 1: Devyn Greer allowed one run and struck out seven for the Oilers in a complete game outing on Saturday in the SoCal’s Best Invitational at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills.

Malia Cockrell had two hits, including a double, and a run batted in for Huntington Beach (2-1-3).

Murrieta Mesa 5, Huntington Beach 4: Jaylene Duarte had a home run for the Oilers in a SoCal’s Best Invitational game at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills.

Cockrell had a triple and drove in a run for Huntington Beach (2-2-3). Ameryn Humble had three hits and two runs scored.

Marina 9, Beckman 1: The Vikings took their overall record to 3-2 on the season in winning their opening game of the Best of the West Tournament at home.

Marina 4, Downey 1: The host Vikings went undefeated on the day, improving to 4-2 on the season.

BASEBALL

Edison 3, El Modena 1: The Chargers finished the Loara Tournament with a victory Saturday at El Modena High.

Luke Serven and Ethan Brand each had two hits for Edison (4-2-1). Jack Ross improved to 2-0, allowing one run in four innings, while Cade Liefer earned his second save.
