High School Roundup: Fountain Valley’s Jake Brooks throws one-hitter at Newport Harbor

UCLA-bound senior Jake Brooks threw a one-hit shutout, leading the Fountain Valley High baseball team to a 4-0 win at Newport Harbor in Monday’s Sunset Conference crossover game.

Brooks, a right-hander, struck out seven and walked one.

Noah Karliner went two for four with two runs batted in for the Barons (6-2), who are ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 poll. Ryan Sullivan had a two-run single.

The Sailors (3-7-1) will host Fountain Valley again on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Huntington Beach 16, Laguna Beach 4: Jake Vogel hit for the cycle in the Oilers’ Sunset Conference crossover game on the road Monday, handing the Breakers their first loss of the season.

Vogel, a UCLA commit, was four for four, and Blake Penso went three for four with a home run, a double and five RBIs for Huntington Beach (6-3), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

The Breakers, the top-ranked team in Division 3, are 8-1.

Edison 10, Corona del Mar 1: Evan Knipe hit a two-run single for the Chargers in Monday’s Sunset Conference crossover game at home.

Luke Serven earned the win for Edison (5-4-1).

Matthew DeCrona had three hits for the Sea Kings (5-4), ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 2.

BOYS’ GOLF

Aliso Niguel Wolverine Tournament: Corona del Mar finished second to Dana Hills 187-190 on Monday in the eighth annual tournament at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

The Sea Kings competed against a field of 14 teams. Colin Huang, Calder Overfelt, John Tipton, Ashvin Wijay were among the golfers who scored for CdM.
