The Laguna Beach High School football team will open its season this week, just not with the opponent it had originally scheduled.

The Breakers will play their first game of the season at Jurupa Valley on Friday at 7 p.m.

A schedule change became necessary after Segerstrom, which had been set to host Laguna Beach on Thursday, had a positive COVID-19 test in its program. Segerstrom football coach Joseph Tagaloa confirmed that the program had a positive test.

Laguna Beach coach John Shanahan said that even in a season defined by the coronavirus pandemic, which has now thrown yet another wrinkle into the schedule, the team will continue to prepare for opponents on a “week-by-week basis.”

The Breakers have a total of five games lined up, with contests also scheduled against Marina, Ocean View, Estancia and Westminster.

“If a game gets canceled or someone calls on a Thursday and says, ‘Hey, we’re ready to play tomorrow,’ we’ll go play them,” Shanahan said of his team’s readiness to play despite the change in opponent.

The Breakers are coming off a 2019 season in which they went 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the Pac 4 League.
