High School Roundup: Costa Mesa and Estancia split league dual meet

Costa Mesa High School senior Jackson Wrubel crossed the finish line in 18 minutes 31.5 seconds to earn the individual win against Estancia in an Orange Coast League cross-country dual meet on Wednesday at home.

Raymond Tran-Nguyen (second, 18:39.1), Sebastian Alvarez (third, 19:44.3), Diego Martinez (fifth, 20:25.8) and Moises Chavez (sixth, 21:03.0) made up the rest of the scoring quintet for the Mustangs.

Costa Mesa improved to 3-2 in league, as Estancia did not have the requisite five runners needed to compile a team score.

The top runner for the Eagles was senior Andres Aguirre, who completed the three-mile race with a time of 20:10.2.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Estancia junior Angelica Pelayo paced the field in 20:33.7 to lead the visiting Eagles to a 27-28 win over Costa Mesa on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League dual meet.

Valerie Madrid (fourth, 22:27.3), Maria Promotor (fifth, 22:34.5), Guadalupe Olivares (eighth, 24:30.2) and Destiny Radillo (ninth, 24:32.2) were the other scoring runners for Estancia (2-2).

The Orange Coast League traditionally runs league cluster meets. The league has been running dual meets this year to accommodate health guidelines brought on because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Estancia coach Charlie Appell said that the win marks the first for the Eagles against their Battle of the Bell rival in a girls’ cross-country league competition in eight years.

Costa Mesa (4-1) had two runners among the top five finishers in Angeles Alatorre (second, 20:50.3) and Daisy Carrillo (third, 21:32.6).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Estancia 16, Portola 9: Noah Gniffke scored seven goals for the undefeated Eagles in Wednesday’s nonleague match on the road.

Logan Richard added six goals for Estancia (7-0), while goalkeeper Griffin Beth made eight saves.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Huntington Beach 6, Corona del Mar 5: Carley Anderson scored three goals as the Oilers beat the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match at CdM.

Hana Homma added a goal and two assists for Huntington Beach (6-0). It is believed to be the first win over Corona del Mar in program history, coach Jacob Moore said.

Gaby Zaretskiy and Morgan O’Connell each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, while Jericho Callender had two assists.

Corona del Mar dropped to 0-6.

Huntington Beach, which has also clinched its third straight Wave League title, closes out league by hosting Fountain Valley on Thursday night.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Pacifica Christian Orange County 16, Capistrano Valley Christian 2: Sophomore Bree Clarke swept at No. 1 singles for the Tritons in Wednesday’s nonleague match at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club, helping Pacifica Christian stay undefeated in its inaugural season.

Lenox Schillereff and Kiana Giunta also swept in singles for the Tritons (4-0), while the team of Mary Callaghan and Gracie Formsma swept in doubles.
