High School Roundup: Huntington Beach’s Matthew Lopez twirls no-hitter

Matthew Lopez struck out five in a no-hitter for the Huntington Beach High School baseball team in its 3-0 win over host Ocean View on Tuesday in a nonleague game.

Oilers coach Benji Medure said that Caden Aoki made a diving play at first base and tossed the ball over to Lopez to complete the no-hitter.

Lopez had just two runners reach base against him in the contest.

Bryan Trujillo also had a run-scoring double for Huntington Beach (6-2).

Ocean View (5-4) had a three-game winning streak snapped.

SOFTBALL

Fountain Valley 9, Edison 8: CJ Garcia hit a walk-off grand slam to cap a comeback victory for the host Barons on Tuesday in a nonleague game.

Fountain Valley improved to 3-7 overall, while Edison fell to 3-5.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 0: Brendan Read had eight kills and four service aces to lead the Sailors to a 25-17, 25-20, 25-19 victory on Tuesday in a Sunset Conference crossover match at home.

Rees Classen added seven kills for Newport Harbor (4-1).

Fountain Valley is now 1-3.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, St. Margaret’s 1: The host Tritons earned a 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20 win over the Tartans on Tuesday in a San Joaquin League match.

Pacifica Christian (5-2, 2-0), ranked third in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 poll, has won four in a row.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 72, Laguna Beach 44: Lauryn Ham and Annika Jiwani each scored 26 points to lead the visiting Tritons in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Nola Mihaly-Garvin also scored 10 points for Pacifica Christian (3-2).

Laguna Beach dropped to 4-6 overall.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Newport Harbor 4, Laguna Beach 0: Laine Briggs, Gigi Davila, Kenna Robar and Aly Thomas all scored for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Wave League match at Newport Harbor High.

It was the third goal in three matches for Briggs.

Alyssa Sims, Antonella Russo, Emmie Degen and Sammy Forbath all had assists for Newport Harbor (7-1-1, 2-0 in league). Jessica Gardner made three saves.

Laguna Beach is now 2-2 overall, 1-1 in league.

Newport Harbor plays at Fountain Valley on Thursday, while Laguna Beach hosts Marina.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 184, Fountain Valley 209: Brothers Jack and Blake Krueger and teammate Jake Rothman all shot even par, tying for the top round of the match on Tuesday in a nonleague contest at Willowick Golf Course.

Edison moved its record to 7-2 overall, while Fountain Valley dropped to 1-5 on the season.
