High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ basketball edges El Toro in season opener

Senior guard Levi Darrow made two free throws in the final minute as the Newport Harbor High School boys’ basketball team opened its season with a 43-42 nonleague win at El Toro on Monday night.

Darrow finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Sailors, who host Fountain Valley on Wednesday at 7 p.m.


Marina 3, Edison 2: Gavin Langer hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Vikings in Monday’s nonleague game at Marina High.

Langer also hit a solo home run for the Vikings (6-6-1). Senior left-handed pitcher Connor Wylde got the win, throwing a complete game and allowing eight hits. He struck out five.

Marina senior Matt Hauver had a two-out RBI single in the first inning for the winners.

Edison is now 6-6.

Huntington Beach 18, Fountain Valley 4: The host Oilers scored 12 runs in the fourth inning of Monday’s nonleague game.

Blake Penso was three for three with two home runs and five runs batted in for Huntington Beach (9-3). Aiden Espinoza, who was two for three with four RBIs, also had a home run, as did Caden Aoki.

Adam Baggetta had a double and two RBIs for Fountain Valley (9-4).


Corona del Mar 16, Huntington Beach 2: Scott Thompson and Austin Dick swept in doubles for the Sea Kings in Monday’s Surf League opener at CdM.

Max Krykunenko, Niels Hoffmann and Jack Cross swept in singles for CdM, which improved to 8-0 overall.

Huntington Beach is now 6-4 overall.

Laguna Beach 14, Edison 4: Casey Boehm and Matt Berk swept in doubles for the Breakers in Monday’s Wave League opener at Laguna Beach High.

Ian McLaughlin and Taro Sakai won twice each in singles for Laguna Beach (7-2).

Jason You won twice in singles for Edison (1-9).


Calvary Chapel 3, Estancia 1: Senior opposite Noah Gniffke had 10 kills to lead Estancia in a 15-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-14 loss on Monday in an Orange Coast League match at home.

Senior middle blocker Nathan Sweet provided 4½ blocks, senior setter Logan Richards contributed 13 assists, and senior outside hitter Ryan Ray had eight digs for Estancia.

Estancia is 1-1 overall and in league play.


Estancia 266, Orange 364: Lexi Jaeger led the host Eagles, carding a 43 on the par-35 front nine at Costa Mesa Country Club Monday in an Orange Coast League match.

Estancia is now 3-1 overall and in league.


Los Alamitos 4, Corona del Mar 0: The host Sea Kings were shut out on Monday in a Surf League match, dropping to 3-7-3 overall and 1-2 in league.

Corona del Mar plays host to Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay match on Wednesday.
