High School Roundup: Laguna Beach’s Mateo Bianchi victorious at Distance Meet of Champions

Laguna Beach senior Mateo Bianchi posted a winning time of four minutes 11.82 seconds in the 1,600 meters of the Meet of Champions Distance Classic on Saturday at Arcadia High School.

Bianchi, a UCLA signee, chased down Newbury Park sophomore Lex Young (4:12.66) in the final lap.

The Laguna Beach distance-running ace now possesses the fifth-fastest 1,600-meter time in the state this season.

SOFTBALL

Huntington Beach 1, Murrieta Mesa 0: Zoe Prystajko struck out 14 batters in a no-hitter for the Oilers in Monday’s nonleague game at home.

Prystajko issued three walks in the standout pitching performance, which was the second no-hitter and seventh shutout thrown by Huntington Beach pitching this season.

Mikayla Carman went two for three with a home run and a double, accounting for the game’s only run.

Huntington Beach (13-1), ranked fifth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, plays host to No. 7 Marina (10-2) in a Surf League game on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 0: Brendan Read had a team-high 17 kills to go with seven digs and two service aces to lead the host Sailors on Monday in a nonleague match.

Rees Clasen also had 14 kills and three digs.

Newport Harbor improved to 8-3 overall.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach 6, Corona del Mar 5: It took a season-high six goals for Huntington Beach to remain unbeaten on Monday in a Sunset Conference crossover game on the road.

Carson Dykes recorded a hat-trick for Huntington Beach (10-0-2), ranked No. 2 in the Division 2 poll. Cesar Cerda, Mario Hernandez and Josh Lucas each scored one goal.

Hassan Selim scored twice on penalty kicks in the second half to tie the score at 5-5. Carson Webb, Cameron Razaghi and Ethan Picarelli each had one goal for the Sea Kings.

Huntington Beach plays at Laguna Beach in a Wave League game on Wednesday, while CdM has a Surf League contest at home on the same day against Edison.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 73, Santa Fe 44: Junior center Jackson Sirianni scored 21 points for the Breakers in Monday’s nonleague game at Laguna Beach High.

Nolan Naess added 18 for the undefeated Breakers (8-0), while Willie Rounaghi and Chase Hall each scored 11 points.

Laguna Beach hosts Corona del Mar in a Sunset Conference crossover game Wednesday at 7 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 17, Los Alamitos 1: Niels Hoffmann, Max Krykunenko and Jack Cross all swept in singles for the Sea Kings in Monday’s Surf League match on the road.

The doubles teams of Scott Thompson and Austin Dick, as well as Jack Johnson and Alex Nikolaev, each swept for Corona del Mar (10-1, 2-1 in league).

CdM plays at Huntington Beach (0-3 in league) on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Estancia 243, Calvary Chapel 309: Estancia’s Lexi Thorpe was the medalist with a seven-over-par 42 in Monday’s Orange Coast League match at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Estancia improved to 5-1, both in league and overall.
