High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ lacrosse outlasts Edison

Olivia Gritzmacher scored seven goals as the Newport Harbor High School girls’ lacrosse team outlasted Edison, 13-12, in a Sunset League match Thursday night at Newport Harbor.

Rowdy Farmer and Joelle Rothbard each scored two goals for Newport Harbor (10-5, 2-1 in league), which moved into a first-place tie with Edison halfway through league play. Rothbard’s goal with 2:39 left ended up being the winning goal. Goalkeeper Lucy Valdes made 10 saves for the Sailors.

Ali Bryant had five goals and Blakely Malpass scored four goals for Edison (7-4, 2-1). Melanie Wieland scored two goals.

Corona del Mar 11, Los Alamitos 10 (OT): The Sea Kings notched their first Sunset League victory on the road Thursday night.

The Sea Kings and Griffins are now both 1-2 in league.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Corona del Mar 2: Brendan Read had 22 kills to lead the visiting Sailors to a 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10 win over the rival Sea Kings on Thursday in the Battle of the Bay.

Rees Clasen added 15 kills for Newport Harbor (11-3, 4-1). Kyle McKibbin added eight kills, three blocks and two service aces, and Luca Curci chipped in with 17 digs and two service aces.

CdM dropped to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in league. The Back Bay rivals are tied for first place with one league contest remaining.

Katella 3, Ocean View 2: Sean Andrews had 10 kills, 24 digs and three aces, but the host Seahawks fell to the Knights 25-15, 17-25, 25-14, 20-25, 15-9 on Thursday in a Golden West League match.

Jeremy Roe added eight kills, and Ethan Mayfield had five kills for Ocean View (2-10, 2-6). Alan Robles handed out 29 assists to go with nine digs and two aces.

BASEBALL

Huntington Beach 2, Edison 1: Ralph Velasquez and Blake Penso each had run-scoring hits for the Oilers in Thursday’s Surf League game at Edison High.

Tyler Prystajko pitched four shutout relief innings for Huntington Beach (13-5, 2-0 in league).

Edison fell to 9-9 overall, 0-2 in league.

Corona del Mar 6, Laguna Beach 1: Matt DeCrona pitched the complete game for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Wave League game at CdM.

DeCrona allowed six hits. He walked one and struck out six.

Blake Butcher had a two-run home run for CdM (12-4, 2-0 in league), while Max Lane and Ryan Zimmerman also had one run batted in each.

Laguna Beach is 6-9 overall, 0-2 in league.

Ocean View 6, Tesoro 5: Rizzy Collado earned the win in relief for the Seahawks in Thursday’s nonleague road game.

Mulivai Levu was three for three with three runs batted in for Ocean View (12-6).

Santiago 9, Los Amigos 6: The Lobos fell to 2-2 in the Garden Grove League after Thursday’s road loss.

SOFTBALL

Huntington Beach 12, Los Alamitos 1 (five innings): Devyn Greer had a pair of home runs and six runs batted in for the Oilers on Thursday in a Surf League game at home.

McKenna Zehnder also homered in the contest for Huntington Beach (17-3, 4-1). Zoe Prystajko had two doubles and drove in two runs. Jaylene Duarte had two hits and two RBIs, and Emma McCraw also had two hits.

Greer allowed one run on three hits, striking out four and walking three in tossing the complete game.

Los Alamitos is now 14-5 overall and 2-3 in league.

Marina 1, Edison 0: Heather Nugent started the game, and Makayla Mathis earned the two-inning save, as the Vikings posted the shutout victory over the host Chargers on Thursday in a Surf League game.

Haylee Orozco provided a run-scoring double to put Marina (11-4, 2-3) on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning.

Isabella Espinoza and Jayden Booth each had a double for Edison (6-8, 2-3).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 67, Huntington Beach 65 (OT): Willa Rath scored 17 points to go with 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals, as the Sailors stunned the Oilers on the road Thursday.

Chase Dionio had a team-leading 20 points for Newport Harbor, which outscored Huntington Beach 27-20 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Cydney Jover provided 12 points for Newport Harbor (10-2), and Emma Fults added eight points, seven rebounds and three assists. Daelyn Renee had four points, including the game-winning free throws.

Emma Coatsworth also had four points, and Kate Bland added two points and two steals.

Huntington Beach dropped to 10-2 overall.

Corona del Mar 67, Marina 35: Trasara Alexander had a game-high 24 points to lead the visiting Sea Kings on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Makena Tomlinson added 18 points for CdM (12-4), and Haley Esquino chipped in with 11 points.

Malia Kawakubo scored a team-high 21 points for Marina (3-12).

Estancia 51, Orange 36: Alejandra Meza paced the Eagles with 11 points on Thursday in an Orange Coast League game at Estancia High School.

Lizbeth Espinoza-Sanchez added 10 points for Estancia (4-8, 3-3), which plays at rival Costa Mesa (2-10, 2-4) in the Battle for the Bell on Tuesday.
