High School Roundup: Laguna Beach boys’ basketball suffers first loss to undefeated Mater Dei

Nolan Naess scored a game-high 20 points for the Laguna Beach High School boys’ basketball team in a 65-32 nonleague loss to Mater Dei on Monday night at Laguna Beach High.

The loss to the powerhouse Monarchs (18-0) was the first of the season for surging Laguna Beach (12-1). The Breakers, ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA poll, also lead the Surf League with a 3-0 mark.

Chase Hall scored five points Monday for Laguna Beach, and Jackson Sirianni added four points.

Wilhelm Breidenbach led Mater Dei, ranked No. 2 in Division 1, with 16 points on Monday. Harrison Hornery added 15 points.

Fairmont Prep 85, Corona del Mar 80 (OT): Scott Truninger scored 17 points for the Sea Kings in Monday’s nonleague game at CdM.

Hudson Bond added 15 points for the Sea Kings (4-8) , and Jack Louks scored 14 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 70, Newport Christian 34: Annika Jiwani had a team-high 22 points and six steals to lead the host Tritons on Monday in an Academy League game.

Lauryn Ham contributed 19 points, nine assists and eight steals, and Charis Wondercheck added 15 points for Pacifica Christian (10-3, 5-0).

Newport Christian is now 1-6 overall and 1-4 in league.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor 3, Laguna Beach 0: James Eadie had eight kills in a 25-12, 25-15, 25-18 win for the Sailors on Monday in a Surf League match at home.

Newport Harbor (12-3, 5-1) completed its regular season by locking up at least a share of the Surf League championship.

Rival Corona del Mar (6-2, 4-1) can join the Sailors as co-league champions with a win over Huntington Beach at home in its league finale on Tuesday, May 11.

Laguna Beach ends its season at 1-11 overall and 0-6 in league.

Estancia 3, Santa Ana 1: The visiting Eagles earned a four-set victory by a count of 25-23, 25-10, 25-27, 25-18 on Monday in an Orange Coast League match.

Estancia improved to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in league.

BASEBALL

Ocean View 8, San Juan Hills 1: Caleb Hohman hit a three-run home run for the Seahawks in Monday’s nonleague game at Ocean View High.

Kai Marden threw four strong innings to earn the win for Ocean View (13-6-1).

La Quinta 13, Los Amigos 1: The Lobos dropped their Garden Grove League home game against the Aztecs on Monday.

Los Amigos (2-3 overall and in league), which has suffered consecutive losses for the first time this season, will face La Quinta again on Thursday in a road game at 3 p.m.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Westminster 260, Estancia 265: Leeann Hong was the medalist for the visiting Lions, carding a 46 on the par-35 Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club on Monday.

Estancia dropped to 8-2 overall and within the Orange Coast League.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Laguna Beach senior Mateo Bianchi won the seeded flight of the boys’ 3,200 meters at the Arcadia Invitational on Friday, posting a personal-best time of 9 minutes 11.49 seconds.

Bianchi, who signed with UCLA, returned to the course on Saturday night for the invitational flight in the mile, taking seventh place with a time of 4:19.56.
