High School Roundup: CdM girls’ track and field places fourth in Orange County Championships

Caroline Glessing finished in the top three of a trio of events on Saturday to lead Corona del Mar girls’ track and field team to a fourth-place showing in the Orange County Championships at Mission Viejo High School.

Glessing was second in the 200 (25.68) and the long jump (17-8½), and she took third in the 100 (12.77).

Coco Chinnici placed third in the 400 (59.52), Ariana Novela took third in the discus throw (127-3) and Shannon Strassman was fourth in the pole vault (11-0) to help the Sea Kings climb the leaderboard.

Fountain Valley’s Kaho Cichon secured the lone individual win among local athletes, blazing a trail with a time of 2:11.16 in the 800. Cichon bettered the competition by a full two seconds in the race.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Edison’s Tyler Hampton won the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 2 inches to account for one of two event victories for the Chargers in the Orange County Championships at Mission Viejo High School on Saturday.

The Chargers also had Wylie Cleugh win the boys’ 1,600-meter rated race with a time of four minutes 32.92 seconds. Fountain Valley’s Shane Hill was third in the heat in 4:35.56.

Other locals posting top-five finishes at the meet were Marina’s Ayden Lastra in the 200 (fourth, 22.51); Newport Harbor’s Carson Bauers in the 400 (third, 50.77) and Corona del Mar’s Jason Plumb in the long jump (second, 22-0).

Huntington Beach 1, Tustin 0 (OT): Reid Fisher scored on an assist from Slater Hammer in the second minute of overtime on Saturday to send the visiting Oilers to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Daniel Kotkosky made four saves for the Oilers.

Huntington Beach (13-2-2) travels to take on Newhall Hart (9-2-1) on Wednesday. Hart defeated Santiago 3-0 in its second-round match.

Capistrano Valley 3, Edison 0: The Chargers were blanked in a second-round match of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Saturday on the road.

Edison, which shared the Surf League title with Los Alamitos, concludes the season with a record of 12-5-1.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Sage Hill 3, Thermal Coachella Valley 2: The Lightning upset the top-seeded team in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs in Friday’s second-round match on the road.

Anisha Punia scored twice for Sage Hill (10-3-2), and Lexi Van Den Bosch added a goal. Assists went to Lauren Graham, Elaine He and Izzy De Leon.

Sage Hill handed Desert Valley League champion Coachella Valley (15-1-1) its first loss of the season.

The Lightning play at South Pasadena in the Division 5 quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Costa Mesa 2, San Gabriel Gabrielino 1: The Mustangs advanced after upsetting the No. 4-seeded Eagles in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs on Friday at Costa Mesa High.

Orange Coast League champion Costa Mesa (9-4-5) plays at Indio Shadow Hills in a Division 4 quarterfinal match Tuesday.

Mater Dei 4, Huntington Beach 0: The Oilers were blanked by the No. 2-seeded Monarchs in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs Friday at Mater Dei High.

Huntington Beach finished the season 8-10-1.

San Dimas 3, Ocean View 2: The Seahawks battled but fell to the top seed in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs Friday at Ocean View High.

Ocean View, which finished as Golden West League co-champion, finished the season 10-5-2.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Fountain Valley 14, Whitney 4: The No. 2-seeded Barons advanced to the CIF quarterfinals for the first time in program history after winning Friday’s Division 3 second-round playoff match on the road.

The doubles teams of Kaylee Tran and Emily Tran, Paige Ngo and Christy Chau, as well as Iris Chau and Skylar Ngo, all swept for Fountain Valley.

Fountain Valley (15-4) plays at Ventura Foothill Technology in a Division 3 quarterfinal match Monday.

Sage Hill 13, Esperanza 5: The No. 3-seeded Lightning cruised Friday in the second round of the Division 3 playoffs on the road.

Freshman Halle Parker swept in singles for Sage Hill (17-1), as did the doubles teams of Kana Byrd and Ava Herin, as well as Sunny Sun and Jackie Hu.

The Lightning play at the Archer School of Los Angeles on Monday in a Division 3 quarterfinal match.

Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula 11, Corona del Mar 7: The Sea Kings’ season ended Friday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs on the road.

Reece Kenerson and Jane Paulson won twice in doubles for CdM (12-3). So did the Sea Kings’ other doubles teams of Hannah Jervis and Tori Varela, as well as Sophia Andrei-Birca and Cate Montgomery.

Top-seeded Peninsula improved to 6-1.

Westlake Village Westlake 13, Huntington Beach 5: The Oilers lost on the road to the No. 2-seeded Warriors in the first round of the Open Division playoffs Friday.

It was the first loss of the season for Huntington Beach (14-1), the Surf League champion.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 13, Sherman Oaks Buckley 5: The Tritons continued their postseason run in their inaugural season, winning in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs on Friday at Los Caballeros Racquet Club in Fountain Valley.

Sophomore Bree Clarke swept in singles for Pacifica Christian (13-3), while senior captain Lenox Schillereff won twice.

Mary Callaghan and Grace Formsma swept in doubles for the Tritons, who play at No. 3-seeded Beverly Hills in the Division 4 quarterfinals on Monday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Huntington Beach 60, Corona del Mar 47: Jason Ford scored 13 points for the Oilers in Friday’s Wave League game at Corona del Mar High.

The Oilers (6-10, 2-2 in league) are tied for second place in the league with Marina with two games remaining.

Greg Walsh led Corona del Mar (5-9, 0-4) with 14 points.

Los Alamitos 69, Laguna Beach 57: Nolan Naess scored 25 points for the Breakers in Friday’s Surf League game at Laguna Beach High.

Willie Rounaghi added 19 points for Laguna Beach (12-3, 3-1 in league), which lost its third straight game. The Breakers fell into a first-place tie with Los Alamitos (9-3, 3-1) with two league games remaining.

Laguna Beach plays at Newport Harbor on Tuesday.

Ocean View 66, Katella 32: Luke Washington scored 18 points for the Seahawks in Friday’s Golden West League game at Ocean View High.

Ocean View (9-6, 8-0) has clinched at least a share of the Golden West League title, as the Seahawks are two games clear of second-place Garden Grove (6-3, 5-2) in the loss column.

Ryan Vu added 12 points for the Seahawks.

Corona del Mar 41, San Diego Clairemont 40 (OT): Scott Truninger had a team-high 15 points to lead the visiting Sea Kings in Saturday’s nonleague contest.

Hudson Bond added seven points for CdM (6-9). Mathys Djomby-Enyawe and Asher Hamilton each chipped in with six points.

SOFTBALL

Edison 8, Newport Harbor 1: Izabella Martinez had a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Chargers on Friday in a Sunset Conference crossover game at home.

Isabella Espinoza and Emma Mendoza each had two hits and drove in a run for Edison (9-8).

Jenna Gorden threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits to earn the win.

Eliana Gottlieb and McKayla Cotton each had two-hit afternoons with a double apiece for Newport Harbor (12-7). Ava Nolan knocked in the run for the Sailors.
