High School Roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ basketball claims Wave League championship

Chase Dionio scored 17 points to go with four assists and three steals to lead the Newport Harbor High School girls’ basketball team to a 58-41 win over Edison and the outright Wave League title on Monday at home.

Newport Harbor athletic director Jerry Murray said he believes the last league title for the program came in the 1993-94 season, when the Sailors were coached by Shannon Jakosky.

Newport Harbor (13-2, 5-0) broke the game open by outscoring the Chargers 23-6 in the third quarter.

Cydney Jover had 14 points and three assists, Emma Fults contributed seven points, 11 rebounds and four steals, and Willa Rath added six points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals for the Sailors.

Daelyn Renee scored nine points and Emma Coatsworth supplied four points, seven rebounds and two blocks for Newport Harbor.

Edison (8-7, 3-2) has clinched second place in the league.

Corona del Mar 65, Los Alamitos 30: Trasara Alexander had a game-high 20 points to lead the Sea Kings on Monday in a Surf League game at home.

Dorothy Schwenck made four three-pointers to key a 16-point night for CdM (15-4, 5-0). Makena Tomlinson added 15 points, while Haley Esquino and Sarah Audiss each had six points. Olivia Sargent also scored two points.

The Sea Kings have clinched at least a share of the Surf League title.

Huntington Beach (13-2, 4-1) will have its chance to finish atop the league with CdM on Wednesday. The Oilers will host the Sea Kings in a season finale that night.

Laguna Beach 46, Marina 42: The host Breakers snapped a five-game losing streak on Monday in a Wave League game, picking up their first win of league play.

Laguna Beach is now 7-17 overall and 1-4 in league, while Marina dropped to 3-17 overall and 1-4 in league.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 66, Avalon 38: Annika Jiwani and Lauryn Ham each scored 24 points to lead the Tritons on Monday in an Academy League game on the road.

Nola Mihaly-Garvin added 11 points for Pacifica Christian (12-3, 6-0), which will play host to Avalon on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Fountain Valley 13, Ventura Foothill Technology 5: The visiting Barons swept in doubles in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs on Monday.

The teams of Kaylee Tran and Emily Tran, Paige Ngo and Christy Chau, as well as Skylar Ngo and Iris Chau, all swept for No. 2-seeded Fountain Valley (16-4). Ngi Trinh swept in singles for the Barons, who continue their deepest playoff run in program history.

Fountain Valley plays host to No. 3-seeded Sage Hill in a Division 3 semifinal match Wednesday.

Sage Hill 12, The Archer School of Los Angeles 6: Freshmen Halle Parker and Jazi Aftabi swept in singles for the Lightning in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs Monday at the Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.

Kana Byrd and Ava Herin swept in doubles for No. 3-seeded Sage Hill (18-1).

The Lightning play at Fountain Valley in a Division 3 semifinal match Wednesday.

Beverly Hills 11, Pacifica Christian Orange County 7: The Tritons’ run in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs ended with a quarterfinal loss to the No. 3 seed on the road Monday.

Pacifica Christian finished its inaugural season with a 13-4 record.

BASEBALL

Los Amigos 5, Rancho Alamitos 0: Juan Gutierrez pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five, to lead the Lobos on Monday in a Garden Grove League game at home.

Gutierrez added two hits, including a double, a run scored, and a run batted in for Los Amigos (3-4 overall and in league) offensively. Maysen Navarro also had three hits, a run scored and drove in a run.

Lobos coach Aaron Pines, who was hospitalized for his battle with cancer earlier this year, has returned to the team. Due to the coronavirus-shortened season in his first year at Los Amigos, Monday marked the first time that Pines had coached against Rancho Alamitos, where his brother, Greg, is the head coach, and his father, Myron, is an assistant.

“No extra motivation,” Pines said of his approach to the game. “I told [my players] that Coach Pines is going to be in the other dugout, also, but they know that we need to win for playoffs, and I want them to win for them.”

Myron Pines opted to watch the game from the stands.

Los Amigos will travel to Rancho Alamitos (5-9, 2-5) for the second game of their home-and-home set on Thursday.

BOYS’ GOLF

Calvary Chapel 206, Costa Mesa 255: Costa Mesa’s Cristopher Rodriguez earned medalist honors with a two-over-par 37 on Monday in an Orange Coast League match at Anaheim Hills Golf Course.

Costa Mesa fell to 6-4 overall and in league.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Estancia 251, Ocean View 307: Estancia’s Lexi Thorpe was the medalist after posting a score of 43 on the par-35 Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club in an Orange Coast League match on Monday.

Estancia improved to 9-2 overall and in league, while Ocean View is now 3-9 overall and 3-8 in league.

Costa Mesa 228, Calvary Chapel 278: Costa Mesa’s Sydney Ngo led all competitors with a two-over-par 33 on Monday in an Orange Coast League match at David L. Baker Golf Course.

The Mustangs are now 7-4 overall and in league, while Calvary Chapel fell to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in league.
