High School Roundup: Costa Mesa boys’ basketball drops regional semifinal at Roosevelt

The Costa Mesa High School boys’ basketball team saw its season end on the road Thursday, as the Mustangs fell at top-seeded Fresno Roosevelt 79-51 in a CIF State Southern California Regional Division 5-AA semifinal game.

Nathan Schipper and Christian Dasca each had 13 points for Costa Mesa. Aiden Spallone and Gio Quero added seven points apiece.

The Mustangs lose to Calvary Chapel 64-55 in the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA championship game on Wednesday, the third loss for Costa Mesa against its Orange Coast League rival this season.

Costa Mesa (15-8) was the second-place team in the Orange Coast League this season.

Roosevelt (16-4) will play host to No. 2-seeded Carlsbad Sage Creek (16-11) in a regional championship game on Saturday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

San Diego Rancho Bernardo 72, Newport Harbor 36: Willa Rath had a team-high 11 points, but the visiting Sailors were eliminated from the CIF State Southern California Regional Division 3-AA playoffs on Thursday in the semifinals.

Daelyn Renee and Chase Dionio each had eight points for Newport Harbor. Emma Fults added five points, and Cydney Jover scored four points.

Newport Harbor (19-3), the Wave League champion, won the CIF Southern Section Division 4A championship this season. It marked the first CIF title for the program.

Rancho Bernardo (21-8) will remain at home to face San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea (22-0) in a regional championship game on Saturday.
