High School Roundup: Laguna Beach girls’ water polo edges Los Alamitos

Charlotte Riches scored five goals as the Laguna Beach High School girls’ water polo team edged Los Alamitos 12-11 in a Surf League match Thursday at Corona del Mar High.

Ava Knepper added four goals for Laguna Beach (13-2, 1-1 in league). The Breakers, ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, bounced back after consecutive losses.

Lela McCarroll, Cleo Washer and Lexi Parness also scored for Laguna Beach, and goalkeeper Lauren Schneider made 11 saves.

Los Alamitos (10-3, 1-1) is ranked No. 4 in Division 1.

Edison 13, Marina 4: Lily Worley scored four goals to lead the Chargers in Thursday’s Wave League match at CdM.

Gabby Kelly added three goals for Edison (5-6, 1-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in Division 2.

Lily Ensley scored three goals to pace Marina (4-11, 0-1).

Huntington Beach 21, Fountain Valley 1: Jericho Callender scored six goals for the Oilers in a Wave League opener Thursday at CdM.

Hannah Homma had five goals for Huntington Beach, ranked No. 17 in Division 1. Gaby Zaretskiy scored four goals.

Nicole Waldschmidt had the lone goal for Fountain Valley.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 2, Corona del Mar 1: Nikki Scott and Alex Wood scored for the Chargers in the Surf League match Thursday night at Edison High.

Edison improved to 10-5-2 overall, and 1-1 in league.

Freshman Lilly Borland scored a header goal off a corner kick for CdM (11-2-2, 0-2), ranked No. 2 in Division 2. Goalkeepers Sydney Walls and Alex Boserup split time and each made four saves.

Edison plays at Huntington Beach on Tuesday, while CdM travels to Los Alamitos.

Costa Mesa 6, Orange 0: Bryanna Elias had two goals and two assists to lead the Mustangs on Thursday in an Orange Coast League match on the road.

Ana Baltazar also scored twice for Costa Mesa (4-9-2, 2-0). Kyra Kirsch had a goal and an assist, Daisy Carrillo scored a goal, and Brianna Calderon and Jayde Rubright each had an assist.

Santa Ana 3, Estancia 0: Lily Carcano scored twice for the host Saints in an Orange Coast League match on Thursday.

Valerie Garcia added a goal and an assist for Santa Ana (8-7-3, 3-1).

Estancia dropped to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in league.

Laguna Beach 1, Fountain Valley 0: The Breakers stopped a three-match losing streak with Thursday’s Wave League victory.

Laguna Beach improved to 3-5-2 overall and 1-1 in league. Fountain Valley is 5-7-3 overall and 0-2 in league.

Los Alamitos 2, Huntington Beach 0: Marissa Salazar and Espi Logan scored the goals for the host Griffins on Thursday in a Surf League game.

Huntington Beach fell to 10-4-4 overall and 1-1 in league.

Newport Harbor 1, Marina 0: Laine Briggs scored off Brielle Benedict’s assist to lift the Sailors in Thursday’s Wave League match at Marina High.

Emily Park made five saves for Newport Harbor (7-8-4, 2-0 in league). Coach Justin Schroeder also credited the back line play of Stella Gaffney, Ally Thomas, Savannah Stewart, Emmie Degan and Delaney Gahm in helping to preserve the shutout.

Marina fell to 5-5-2 overall, and 1-1 in league.

The Sailors host Laguna Beach on Tuesday, while Marina plays at Fountain Valley.

Westminster 3, Ocean View 1: Jordan Galvin registered a hat-trick to send the host Lions past the rival Seahawks on Thursday in a Golden West League match.

Ocean View (7-4, 3-1) returns to the field against Garden Grove at home on Tuesday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Pacifica Christian Orange County 1, Downey Calvary Chapel 1: The visiting Tritons moved their record to 1-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in Academy League play with Thursday’s result.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Estancia 42, Santa Ana 21: Mackenzie Sanchez had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Eagles on Thursday in an Orange Coast League game on the road.

Estancia improved to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in league.

Los Alamitos 63, Huntington Beach 33: Akemi Tanga scored a game-high 15 points for the Oilers, but the host Griffins earned the win on Thursday in a Surf League game.

Emie Fell scored 12 points to lead Los Alamitos (11-4, 1-0).

Huntington Beach dropped to 7-10 overall and 0-2 in league.

Edison 57, Laguna Beach 28: The host Chargers picked up their first win in Wave League play on Thursday night.

Mia Cassel had 15 points and six steals for Edison (8-14, 1-1). Cynthia Dinh and Kat Rumsey each scored 11 points, and Gwen Ontiveros scored nine points with all of them coming from the three-point line.

Alexandra Grombchevsky scored 11 points for Laguna Beach (15-6, 1-1). Sophie Marriner had four points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Elaina Seybold also had eight points for the Breakers.

Newport Harbor 60, Marina 18: Cydney Jover paced the Sailors with 18 points on Thursday in a Wave League game.

Aissa Grum also had 12 points, three assists and three steals for Newport Harbor (15-5, 2-0). Emma Fults added 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Kate Leibe also contributed eight points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 86, Avalon 26: The Tritons extended their winning streak to three games on Thursday in an Academy League game at home.

Pacifica Christian is now 11-5 overall and 3-0 in league.

Sage Hill 76, St. Margaret’s 36: Kat Righeimer paced the Lightning with 21 points in a San Joaquin League game at home on Thursday.

Zoie Lamkin provided a full line with 17 points, 10 steals, seven rebounds and six assists for Sage Hill (14-7, 2-1). Isabel Gomez contributed 13 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals, Emily Eadie added 16 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, and Annabelle Spotts had seven points, six rebounds and four assists.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 93, Fairmont 44: Dylan Godfrey and Alex Stewart each scored 16 points, helping the Tritons pick up their first San Joaquin League win Thursday night in San Juan Capistrano.

Pacifica Christian, ranked No. 10 in Division 2A, improved to 9-11 overall and 1-2 in league.

The Tritons play at Sage Hill in a nonleague game Saturday at 7 p.m.

WRESTLING

Newport Harbor 66, Huntington Beach 6: The visiting Sailors capped their Wave League schedule with a win over the Oilers in Thursday’s dual meet.

Newport Harbor improved to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in league.
