High School Roundup: Estancia girls’ basketball beats rival Costa Mesa

Mackenzie Sanchez had 10 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds to lead the Estancia High School girls’ basketball team to a 49-24 win over Costa Mesa on Monday in the first round of the Battle for the Bell on the road.

Alexis Orellana had a team-high 12 points for Estancia (10-7, 2-2), which also had Lizbeth Sanchez contribute 10 points, four assists and four steals.

Costa Mesa fell to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in Orange Coast League play.

Huntington Beach 43, Newport Harbor 30: Akemi Tanga and Lily Alonso scored 10 points apiece for the Oilers in Monday’s Sunset Conference crossover win on the road.

Huntington Beach improved to 8-10 overall.

Emma Fults had nine points and 18 rebounds to lead Newport Harbor (15-6). Chase Dionio had 11 points, and Aissa Grum added four points and eight rebounds for the Sailors.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 72, Los Angeles Brentwood 68: Addison Deal paced the Tritons with 28 points on Monday in a nonleague game in the Orangewood Showcase.

Annika Jiwani also scored 16 points for Pacifica Christian (13-5).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Fountain Valley 53, Laguna Beach 39: Jackson Sirianni had a team-high 16 points for the Breakers, but it was the visiting Barons that walked away with the victory on Monday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Kai Gillies scored nine points for Laguna Beach (10-9), and Max Burchi and Aidan Del Col chipped in with seven points apiece.

Fountain Valley improved to 5-6 overall.

Huntington Beach 55, Irvine 53: The host Oilers picked up the win in nonleague play on Monday afternoon.

Huntington Beach (5-16) held on to win after leading 40-25 entering the fourth quarter.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 60, Compton Dominguez 53: Alex Stewart had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tritons on Monday in the MLK Dream Classic at Bellflower St. John Bosco High.

Tanner Deal added 16 points for Pacifica Christian (10-11). Jeffry Bohlinger also scored 14 points for the Tritons.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Costa Mesa 3, Estancia 0: The Mustangs improved to 5-9-2 overall and 3-0 in the Orange Coast League with Monday’s home win over their crosstown rivals in the first meeting of the Battle for the Bell.

Jayde Rubright and Itzel Ramirez each had a goal and an assist in the contest for Costa Mesa. Brianna Calderon scored an unassisted goal for the Mustangs’ other tally.

Estancia dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-2 in league.
