High School Roundup: CdM boys’ soccer shuts out rival Newport Harbor

Jonathan Cheng had a goal and an assist to lead the Corona del Mar High School boys’ soccer team to a 2-0 win over rival Newport Harbor on Monday in the Battle of the Bay match at Davidson Field.

Tommy Cianfrani added an assist for CdM (8-4), which extended its winning streak to three in the Sunset Conference crossover match. Matt Wood also made five saves in the shutout.

The Sea Kings have won three of their past four meetings with the Sailors. Corona del Mar returns home for another conference crossover contest against Laguna Beach (4-8) on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Newport Harbor (7-3-3) hits the road to take on Los Alamitos (7-5-2) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Calvary Chapel 5, Costa Mesa 0: The visiting Mustangs dropped their third in a row on Monday in an Orange Coast League match.

Costa Mesa (4-12-4, 1-5) has been outscored 12-0 over that stretch. The Mustangs renew their rivalry with Estancia (3-10-2, 3-1-1) at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 1, Tarbut V’Torah 1: The host Tritons earned a draw on Monday in an Academy League match at Vanguard University.

Pacifica Christian (1-8-2, 0-6-2) improved upon its first meeting against Tarbut V’Torah on Thursday, in which the Tritons took a 5-0 loss.

Los Amigos 1, Santiago 1: Arturo Mota scored an unassisted goal for the Lobos in Monday’s Garden Grove League match at home.

Daniel Terrones made two saves for Los Amigos (8-3-1, 4-1-1), which will be at home against Bolsa Grande (2-11-2, 0-6) on Wednesday, before the Lobos travel for their second meeting with first-place Santiago (8-3-6, 4-0-2) on Friday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Costa Mesa 0, Calvary Chapel 0: The Mustangs extended their unbeaten streak to six games on Monday in an Orange Coast League match at home.

Costa Mesa (7-9-3, 5-0-1) had won five in a row prior to taking on Calvary Chapel (6-5-1, 3-1-1), which it will face again on the road on Thursday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Los Alamitos 70, Corona del Mar 58: George Bruening paced the Sea Kings with 18 points on Monday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Hudson Bond added 14 points for CdM (19-4).

Bolsa Grande 62, Los Amigos 36: The visiting Lobos saw their losing streak reach eight games on Monday in a Garden Grove League contest against the Matadors.

Los Amigos dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-6 in league.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Saddleback 45, Costa Mesa 24: The host Mustangs lost their fifth game in a row on Monday in an Orange Coast League game.

Costa Mesa dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in league.

Los Amigos 50, Bolsa Grande 23: The Lobos picked up a key Garden Grove League win Monday on the road.

Los Amigos (5-16, 3-3) will play host to the Matadors on Wednesday in the second half of a home-and-home set.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Costa Mesa 16, Saddleback 6: The Mustangs improved to 9-7 overall and 3-0 in Orange Coast League play following Monday’s match at home.
