High School Roundup: Costa Mesa boys’ basketball earns split with Estancia

The Costa Mesa High School boys’ basketball team defended home court in defeating Estancia 56-50 on Wednesday night, earning a split of the league series with its crosstown rival.

Nathan Schipper had 22 points and four steals to lead Costa Mesa (7-15, 2-3). Aiden Spallone added 13 points and five rebounds, and Riley Weinstein chipped in with six points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots for the Mustangs.

Peter Sanchez scored 13 points to lead Estancia (16-8, 3-3). Jaedon Hose-Shea also had 11 points, Lewis Tate nine points and Reef Johnson eight points.

The Mustangs remain at home to face first-place Calvary Chapel (18-7, 7-0) on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Estancia wound up winning the Battle for the Bell series on aggregate score, narrowly outscoring Costa Mesa 102-100 over the home-and-home set this week.

The Eagles beat the Mustangs 52-44 in the first meeting between the rivals at Estancia on Monday.

Edison 72, Corona del Mar 49: Trey Wilborn had a game-high 25 points for the Chargers on Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game at home.

Tyler Hampton scored 12 points, and Dylan Hugues had 10 points for Edison (21-3), which has won 16 games in a row.

Hudson Bond had 11 points for CdM (19-5).

Fountain Valley 68, Newport Harbor 40: The host Barons outscored the Sailors 37-17 in the second half on Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Fountain Valley (8-8) plays Marina at home in a Wave League game on Friday at 7 p.m., while Newport Harbor (15-9) plays at Los Alamitos in a Surf League contest.

Los Alamitos 64, Huntington Beach 43: The Oilers dropped to 6-18 overall with Wednesday’s defeat in a Sunset Conference crossover game at home.

Laguna Beach 63, Marina 61: Max Burchi’s 22 points paced the Breakers, who upset the Vikings on the road Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Aidan Del Col had 14 points, and Jackson Sirianni added 13 points for Laguna Beach (11-11). Kai Gillies and Kanoa Panganiban each had seven points.

Bolsa Grande 52, Los Amigos 44: The host Lobos fell to 2-15 overall and 0-7 in the Garden Grove League following Wednesday’s game.

Segerstrom 64, Ocean View 58: The visiting Seahawks had their three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday in a Golden West League game.

Chico Lopez scored 26 points for Ocean View (13-8, 3-2).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Los Amigos 45, Bolsa Grande 27: The Lobos have won four of their past five games with Wednesday’s victory at home in a Garden Grove League game.

Los Amigos is 6-16 overall and 4-3 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 3, Laguna Beach 0: Jonathan Cheng recorded a hat trick on senior night for the Sea Kings Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover match.

Eduardo Hopkin had two assists and Luke Ianni set up the other goal for CdM (9-4), which has won four in a row. Matt Wood made four saves, and Jack Cross stopped one shot for the Sea Kings.

Laguna Beach dropped to 4-9 on the season.

Edison 4, Marina 0: Scott Hess, Russell Munier, Esteban Palacios and Miller Combs scored goals for the Chargers in Wednesday’s Sunset Conference crossover match on the road.

Edison moved its record to 7-6-3. Marina (3-12-2) has lost four in a row.

Huntington Beach 0, Fountain Valley 0: The Oilers extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches on Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover contest on the road.

Huntington Beach (11-3-5) plays at Newport Harbor in a key Wave League match on Friday at 5 p.m.

Fountain Valley (2-7-4) will be at home against Edison on Friday at 3 p.m.

Los Amigos 10, Bolsa Grande 0: Izaiah Franco and Jason Marin each had hat tricks for the Lobos on Wednesday in a Garden Grove League match.

Humberto Rincon had a goal and three assists for Los Amigos (9-3-1, 5-1-1). Derek Garcia, Allan Marquina and Brandon Medina scored a goal apiece.

Los Amigos plays at Santiago (9-3-6, 5-0-2) in a battle for first place in the Garden Grove League on Friday at 3 p.m. The sides played to a 1-1 draw in their first meeting on Monday at Los Amigos.

Newport Harbor 1, Los Alamitos 1: The Sailors are 7-3-4 overall following Wednesday’s result in a Sunset Conference crossover match at Los Alamitos High School.

Godinez 6, Ocean View 0: The Seahawks fell for the 10th straight match on Wednesday in a Golden West League contest.

Ocean View (0-16-1, 0-7) plays host to Segerstrom (9-8-3, 3-1-3) on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Bolsa Grande 2, Los Amigos 1 (2OT): Ximena Barreras and Isabella Vargas scored goals for the host Matadors, who defeated the Lobos in double overtime on Wednesday to maintain control of first place in the Garden Grove League.

Bolsa Grande (11-2, 7-0) has won eight in a row, while Los Amigos (9-5, 5-2) is in second place in the league.
