High School Roundup: Fountain Valley girls’ basketball wins Surf League championship

Sarah Henry had 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the Fountain Valley High School girls’ basketball team to a 52-48 win at Huntington Beach, as the Barons clinched the outright Surf League title on Wednesday night.

Audrey Tengan had 12 points and Margaret Tengan added 11 points for Fountain Valley (18-5, 5-0 in league), which got help in the form of a Los Alamitos win over second-place Corona del Mar.

Fountain Valley’s previous league title came in 2020, when the Barons were part of the Wave League.

Akemi Tanga had 10 points to lead Huntington Beach (12-13, 1-5), which also received nine points from Audrey Nguyen.

Los Alamitos 51, Corona del Mar 38: Haley Esquino and Makena Tomlinson each had 11 points, but the Sea Kings fell to the Griffins at home on Wednesday in a Surf League game.

Corona del Mar (13-11, 3-2), which plays host to Fountain Valley on Friday, is locked into second place in the league. Los Alamitos (14-8, 2-4) finished in third place.

Santa Ana 40, Costa Mesa 18: The Mustangs finished the season at 3-15 overall and 0-10 in the Orange Coast League with a road defeat on Wednesday.

Edison 51, Marina 34: Mia Cassel had a team-high 18 points to lead the Chargers on Wednesday in a Wave League game at Edison High School.

Edison (9-18, 3-3) will face Laguna Beach (17-10, 3-3) in a second-place tiebreaker game at 5 p.m. on Friday at the neutral site of Fountain Valley High School.

Calvary Chapel 59, Estancia 43: Mackenzie Sanchez had 16 points to lead the visiting Eagles on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League game.

Alexis Orellana and Liz Sanchez each had seven points for Estancia (11-11, 3-6).

Newport Harbor 59, Laguna Beach 34: Chase Dionio had 26 points and five steals to lead the Sailors on Wednesday in a Wave League game at home.

Cydney Jover added 19 points and six steals for Newport Harbor (19-8, 6-0), and Aissa Grum chipped in with six points, four rebounds and five steals.

Sophie Marriner had eight points, eight rebounds and three assists for Laguna Beach.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 80, Santa Ana 59: Nate Schipper had 24 points for the Mustangs in Wednesday’s key Orange Coast League win at Costa Mesa High.

Aiden Spallone scored 19 points, and Riley Weinstein recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for Costa Mesa (9-16, 4-4).

The Mustangs can clinch third place in league and an automatic CIF berth with a win in either of their final two league games — at home against Orange on Thursday, or at Saddleback on Friday.

Calvary Chapel 73, Estancia 44: Calvary Chapel clinched the undefeated Orange Coast League title after Wednesday’s win at Estancia High.

Calvary Chapel finished the regular season at 21-7 overall and 10-0 in league. Estancia finished 17-10 overall and 4-6 in league.

Sage Hill 91, Rowland Heights Southlands Christian 37: The Lightning improved to 14-10 overall and 5-2 in the Academy with a win Wednesday on the road.

Sage Hill, which is in second place, plays at Claremont Webb (6-8, 4-3) to close out the regular season on Friday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 2, Fountain Valley 1 (OT): Eduardo Hopkin scored the game-winning goal for the second match in a row for the visiting Sea Kings on Wednesday in a Surf League match.

Jaden Mwendapole scored the tying goal with five minutes remaining for CdM (11-5, 3-3). Luke Ianni assisted on both goals, and Matt Wood made four saves.

Jacob Cortez scored for Fountain Valley (2-10-4, 0-6).

Santa Ana 3, Costa Mesa 0: The host Mustangs finished the season at 5-14-5 overall and 2-7-1 in the Orange Coast League, winding up in fifth place.

Santa Ana (13-3-5, 9-0-1) won the league championship.

Edison 2, Los Alamitos 1: The visiting Chargers clinched second place in the Surf League and a playoff berth with Wednesday’s victory.

Noah Roy scored the game-winning goal off a free kick from Wyatt Bellinger in the final minute for Edison (9-7-3, 4-2). Steven Garcia also scored a goal for the Chargers.

Estancia 3, Calvary Chapel 0: The Eagles won their regular season finale, finishing in second place in the Orange Coast League.

Eddie Garcia, Richard Cervantes and Kevin Flores scored for Estancia (7-11-2, 7-2-1), which will compete in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs. The boys’ soccer playoff pairings will be unveiled by the section on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Los Amigos 3, Rancho Alamitos 0: The Lobos won their seventh game in a row to clinch the Garden Grove League championship outright on Wednesday on the road.

Izaiah Franco, Omar Arciga and Anthony Gutierrez scored the goals for Los Amigos (12-3-1, 8-1-1). Daniel Terrones made one save for the shutout.

Los Amigos won its first league title since 2019, when the Garden Grove League crown was split three ways with Santiago and Loara.

Garden Grove 5, Ocean View 1: The Seahawks finished the season 0-19-1 overall and 0-10 in the Golden West League with a loss at home on Wednesday.

Claremont Webb 3, Sage Hill 0: Maksym Graham, James McCloud and Jasper Bagley scored the goals for the Gauls on Wednesday in a San Joaquin League game.

Sage Hill dropped to 2-9-3 overall and 2-4-1 in league.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Los Alamitos 4, Corona del Mar 0: The Sea Kings were blanked in Wednesday’s Surf League finale at CdM.

Corona del Mar finished the regular season 13-7-2 overall and 1-5 in league. The Sea Kings, ranked No. 8 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll, will apply for an at-large berth into the postseason.

Santa Ana 2, Costa Mesa 1: The visiting Mustangs suffered their first defeat of Orange Coast League play in the final match of the regular season.

Costa Mesa (10-10-3, 8-1-1) won the league by half a game over Santa Ana (13-8-3, 8-2).

Estancia 0, Calvary Chapel 0: The fourth-place Eagles concluded the season at 5-13-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the Orange Coast League following Wednesday’s match on the road.

Los Amigos 8, Rancho Alamitos 0: The host Lobos produced a season-high goal-scoring output on Wednesday in a Garden Grove League match.

Los Amigos (12-5, 8-2) finished in second place in the league.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 2, Fairmont Prep 0: The Tritons snapped a three-match losing streak with Wednesday’s San Joaquin League road win.

Pacifica Christian improved to 14-8-1 overall, and 2-5-1 in league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 12, Corona del Mar 5: Ava Knepper scored three goals for the Breakers in Wednesday’s Surf League finale at Corona del Mar High.

Charlotte Riches, Lela McCarroll and Ava Houlahan all added two goals for Laguna Beach (23-5, 4-2), ranked No. 2 in the Division 1 coaches’ poll. The Breakers finished second in league.

Makena Macedo scored a pair of goals to lead fourth-place Corona del Mar (12-13, 0-6), ranked No. 14 in Division 1. If they beat Montebello Schurr in a nonleague match Thursday, the Sea Kings will finish the regular season with a .500 record and can apply for an at-large berth into the postseason.

Costa Mesa 16, Santa Ana 4: The Mustangs wrapped up an undefeated Orange Coast League title with Wednesday’s home win.

Costa Mesa finished the regular season 15-9 overall and 4-0 in league.
