On any given day, the athletes from the Corona del Mar High School track and field team face some of the toughest competition in the area, and that is just at practice.

Their ability to push each other in workouts showed itself Saturday in the Orange County Championships at Mission Viejo High School, where three names kept repeatedly popping up on the leaderboard.

Jason Plumb, Caroline Glessing and Ava Simos each took home county titles for CdM, which was the standout school for the area at the meet.

Plumb, who has committed to UC Berkeley, won the boys’ long jump with a personal-best mark of 23 feet, four inches, which he achieved on his second and fourth attempts. He also recorded a mark of 23-2 on his third jump.

Afterward, Plumb pounded his chest, then motioned to the stands by throwing up the fingers that corresponded with his new personal record.

“I just know I can do better,” Plumb said. “I left a couple inches on the board, and I’m just excited. I just got to be patient. I know I can do better, and I’m just excited to keep improving.”

Following Plumb on the runway was Glessing, who claimed the girls’ long jump crown with a season-best mark of 17-9¾.

Simos then edged out Glessing, among others, in the 100-meter sprints with a wind-legal time of 12.32 seconds. A sophomore from Australia, Simos found herself in the final flight by virtue of her performance in the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational — she finished fourth overall in last week’s meet, despite not running in the fastest heat.

“I’m so grateful to have her on my team,” Simos said of Glessing. “It’s really fun being able to do the relay with her and stuff, and just running against her, it’s really fun. I’m so glad that she’s on my team.”

Fireworks at the jump pits continued later in the day, with Fountain Valley’s Jonathan Yu leaping to a career-best mark of 47-2 in the triple jump. Yu maintained his spot atop the county leaderboard in the event, and the mark was good for second in the CIF Southern Section. Temecula Great Oak’s JC Stevenson jumped 48-6 at the Redondo Nike Track Festival on March 12.

“There’s not many meets left this year, but I feel like at least I’m going to try to go for a 48-[foot] jump this year,” Yu said of his goals for the season.

Edison’s Lindy Tarvin continued a positive trajectory, earning her third invitational win of the season in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Her time of 46.19 seconds was the second-best performance of her career. She pulled away from the pack through the last three hurdles on the straightaway.

“I always feel strongest in the last half,” Tarvin said. “My dad likes to compare me to that movie about the racing horse, ‘Seabiscuit.’ I love the competition, and that just always comes to light a fire underneath me in the last 100-[meter] stretch.”

The girls’ hurdles were swept by local athletes, as Pacifica Christian’s Charis Wondercheck paced the field in the 100 high hurdles with a time of 15.73 seconds, one of two athletes to go under 16 seconds.

Wondercheck helped the Tritons win the Division 4A girls’ basketball championship this season.

“It’s just good getting back into the groove because I really do love hurdles,” Wondercheck said of seeing regular action on the track after the COVID-19 pandemic-induced respite. “Obviously, I’m passionate about basketball, too, but [they are] two of my favorite sports, so I’m glad that I get to compete and show my effort in both of them.”

Servite’s Max Thomas and San Clemente’s Caroline Hawkes were named the sprinters of the meet, Dana Hills’ Jai Dawson and JSerra’s Ashlee Gallegos were the distance runners of the meet, and Mater Dei’s Brandon Gorski and Los Alamitos’ Mackenzie Kirk were the field athletes of the meet.
