High School Roundup: Laguna Beach boys’ volleyball upsets CdM in Surf League finale

Oskar Hingel pounded out a team-high 26 kills to go with 13 digs, as the Laguna Beach High School boys’ volleyball team upset visiting Corona del Mar 18-25, 27-25, 28-30, 30-28, 18-16 in a marathon of a Surf League finale.

Riley Gapp contributed 17 kills and three blocks, and Laird Garcia added 14 kills and five blocks for Laguna Beach (15-19, 1-5), ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 poll. Gavin Zaengle distributed 60 assists and provided 10 digs.

As a result of the Corona del Mar (15-9, 2-4) loss, Huntington Beach (19-10, 3-3) clinched the second automatic playoff berth granted to the Surf League. The teams had been on a collision course to require a second-place tiebreaker to determine league seeding.

The section will release its playoff pairings for boys’ volleyball on Monday.

Calvary Chapel 3, Costa Mesa 0: The visiting Eagles polished off an undefeated run through the Orange Coast League with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-22 sweep of the Mustangs on Thursday.

Costa Mesa ended its season at 4-14 overall and 1-9 in league play.

Saddleback 3, Estancia 1: The Roadrunners dispatched the Eagles 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 on Thursday in an Orange Coast League finale.

Estancia (11-6, 5-5) will qualify for the Division 4 playoffs as the third-place team in the league.

BASEBALL

Estancia 22, Saddleback 2: James De La O went three for four with a three-run home run, six runs batted in, and four runs scored on Thursday in an Orange Coast League game on the road.

Trevor Scott also had a three-run home run for Estancia (20-5, 8-5), which also saw Andrew Coyotzi and Cole Lefebvre drive in two runs apiece.

The Eagles have a one-game lead over Santa Ana (11-15, 7-6), which they play twice next week, for third place in league. The top three in the six-team league clinch a playoff berth.

Huntington Beach 6, Point Loma 5 (eight innings): Brian Trujillo provided the game-winning double for the Oilers in extra innings on Thursday in a Boras Classic consolation game at JSerra.

Huntington Beach improved to 17-8 overall.

Los Alamitos 6, Edison 2: The Chargers dropped to 10-16 overall and 1-8 in the Surf League with Thursday’s loss on the road.

Newport Harbor 12, Marina 0: Bryce Blaser went four for four with three runs batted in to lead the Sailors on Thursday in a Wave League finale.

Lucas Perez also had two doubles and drove in four runs for Newport Harbor (16-9, 5-4), which took a half-game lead over Laguna Beach (12-11, 4-4) for second place in league.

Trent Liolios threw five scoreless innings, allowing three hits in a six-strikeout outing to earn the win.

The Breakers, who swept the season series with the Sailors, play at league champion Corona del Mar on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Huntington Beach 5, Atascadero 0: The Oilers won their season-best seventh game in a row to improve to 16-6 overall following their opener in the Best of the West Tournament in Santa Maria.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 189, Huntington Beach 191: The Chargers’ Timothy Jung and the Oilers’ Bodie Wick were co-medalists of the Surf League match with one-under-par rounds of 35 at the Huntington Club on Thursday.

Edison (14-3, 3-0) has won eight matches in a row, while Huntington Beach dropped to 11-4 overall and 2-3 in league.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament: Corona del Mar High School’s Niels Hoffmann fell in the CIF singles quarterfinals Friday afternoon in Ojai, knocking out the last local boys’ tennis competitor from the draw.

Hoffmann was beaten by Steve Nguyen of Canyon, 6-2, 6-3 in a quarterfinal match. He previously had topped Mason Bui of Yorba Linda, 6-0, 7-6 (3), in a round of 16 match.

Costa Mesa 14, Orange 4: The Orange Coast League-champion Mustangs moved their record to 11-3 overall and 9-0 in league play after Thursday’s match at Orange.

Ocean View 10, Godinez 8: The host Seahawks swept the home-and-home set against the Grizzlies with Thursday’s win in Golden West League play.

Ocean View improved to 3-12 overall and 2-8 in league.
