High School Roundup: Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor, Estancia baseball teams advance to CIF semifinals

Dean Carpentier and Ralph Velazquez each hit three-run home runs as the Huntington Beach High baseball team won at Foothill 12-5 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Velazquez added a two-run single for No. 4-seeded Huntington Beach (21-8). Trent Grindlinger scored three runs and Brad Navarro was two for three with two runs scored. Jackson Brummett added a sacrifice fly.

Huntington Beach never trailed, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on Carpentier’s home run.

The Oilers will host Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in a Division 1 semifinal game Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 7, Downey 3: Trent Liolios allowed one earned run over six innings for the Sailors in Friday’s Division 3 playoff quarterfinal game at Newport Harbor High.

Liolios gave up just four hits and struck out eight for Newport Harbor (19-11). Joey Wright pitched a shutout seventh inning and was also two for three with three runs batted in at the plate.

Jackson Gilles was two for four with a home run and two RBIs for the Sailors, while A.J. Guitron-Moore was two for three with a double and two runs scored.

Newport Harbor stays at home Tuesday, when it hosts Oaks Christian in a Division 3 semifinal game.

Estancia 5, Hesperia Christian 0: Andrew Mits threw a complete-game shutout, helping the Eagles advance to the CIF semifinals for the first time in program history after winning on the road Friday in the quarterfinals of the Division 6 playoffs.

Mits allowed five hits and struck out seven for Estancia (26-5).

Jack Moyer was two for four with two RBIs, and Miles Moyer was one for four with a run scored and one batted in. Andrew Coyotzi and John Uchytil also had RBIs.

No. 2-seeded Estancia hosts Santa Ynez in a Division 6 semifinal game Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Cajon 4, Fountain Valley 1: The top-seeded Barons were upset on the road Saturday in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.

The loss to No. 4-seeded Cajon snapped a 15-game winning streak for Fountain Valley (23-5-1).
