High School Roundup: CdM football remains perfect with win at Palos Verdes

The Corona del Mar football team pulled out a 14-7 win over Palos Verdes in a defensive struggle in nonleague play Friday afternoon on the road.

Junior quarterback Kaleb Annett threw a 22-yard touchdown pass with three minutes left in the third quarter to give CdM (3-0) the lead.

Annett completed 13 of 24 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Colin Pene caught the other score.

Senior wide receivers Jack Loucks and Mason Kubichek each caught one pass, but they went for long gains of 39 and 38 yards, respectively.

Corona del Mar plays host to San Clemente (3-0) on Sept. 9.

Loara 34, Costa Mesa 30: The Saxons scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to spoil the Mustangs’ home opener on Friday in a nonleague game at Costa Mesa High.

Senior quarterback Garrett Richards threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns for Costa Mesa (1-2), which will travel to take on Westminster La Quinta (0-2) on Sept. 9.

Junior running back Edward Franco carried the ball 11 times for 100 yards and a touchdown. He turned three catches into 60 yards and two receiving scores.

Senior wide receiver Riley Weinstein made four receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World 42, Estancia 0: The Fighting Scots shut out the host Eagles on Friday in a nonleague game at Jim Scott Stadium.

Estancia (1-1) faces Santiago (1-1) at Garden Grove High on Thursday.

Westminster 35, Los Amigos 0: The visiting Lions held the Lobos to nine rushing yards on Friday in a nonleague game at Garden Grove High.

Adrian Ramirez made nine catches for 57 yards for Los Amigos (1-1). The Lobos line up against Saddleback (2-0) at Segerstrom High on Sept. 9.

JSerra 28, Newport Harbor 21: Sophomore running back George Perez rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Lions over the Sailors in a nonleague game on Friday night.

Newport Harbor had a pair of defensive touchdowns – an interception return by senior cornerback Billy Reilly and a fumble recovery in the end zone by senior defensive lineman Trey Regitz.

Senior quarterback Colton Joseph added a short-yardage rushing touchdown for the Sailors, who trailed 21-0 before rallying to tie the score early in the fourth quarter.

Newport Harbor (2-1) plays at Capistrano Valley (3-0) on Sept. 9.

Ocean View 8, University 6: Sophomore running back Haston Allen rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown, as the Seahawks defeated the Trojans on Friday in a nonleague game at Ocean View High.

Ocean View (1-2) won the game without completing a pass, as five players rushed a total of 58 times for a combined 234 yards for the Seahawks. Senior Dylan Mayorga had 14 carries for 63 yards.

Sage Hill 42, Simi Valley Grace Brethren 41: Senior quarterback Carson Green threw for six touchdowns, as the Lightning rallied from a 15-point deficit in the final eight minutes to come out on top Friday in a nonleague game at home.

Sophomore cornerback James Karahalios’ interception at the Sage Hill 4 sparked the comeback for Sage Hill (2-0), which plays host to Moreno Valley Leadership Military Academy (0-1) on Sept. 9.

Junior wide receiver Danyel Kahn had three touchdowns, the last two keying the Lightning’s come-from-behind victory. Junior running back Aidan Raymer ran in the go-ahead two-point conversion behind a block from senior offensive lineman Ty Mazakas with under three minutes remaining.

Senior wide receiver Steven Karahalios had three receiving touchdowns and an interception.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Magnolia 0: Freshman setter Addie Roberson had 19 service aces to lead the Tritons over the visiting Sentinels on Friday in a nonleague match.

Senior outside hitter Rebecca Penjoyan added nine kills for Pacifica Christian (5-2), which plays host to Upland Western Christian on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
