High School Roundup: Estancia girls’ golf bests Costa Mesa in first round of Battle for the Bell

Costa Mesa’s Sydney Ngo earned medalist honors, but it was crosstown rival Estancia that pulled out a seven-stroke victory, 269-276, on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League match at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Estancia moved above the .500 mark in taking its overall record to 5-4. The Eagles also improved to 5-1 in Orange Coast League play, half a game back of St. Margaret’s, which was 5-0 in league play through Wednesday.

The Tartans dealt the Eagles their only loss in league, a 209-229 defeat on Sept. 8 at San Juan Hills Golf Club.

Danielle Breitwieser paced Estancia with a round of 46. Landry Harder (48), Teegan Dunham (56), Grace Boyce (56) and Marina Mortan (63) also contributed to the winning total for the Eagles.

Ngo carded a one-over-par 36 for the match, which was played on the front nine. The loss took Costa Mesa to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in league.

Costa Mesa’s scoring quintet also included Grace Wilborn (51), Aubree Jackson (61), Alyssa Ochoa (63) and Mia Soueidan (65).

The Battle for the Bell rivals will meet again on Monday, Oct. 10.

Edison 221, Laguna Beach 264: The Chargers beat the Breakers in the Sunset Conference crossover match at Mile Square Golf Course on Wednesday.

Edison (5-2) has put together back-to-back victories for the second time this season.

Laguna Beach (2-3) has lost its last two matches.

Orange Lutheran 194, Marina 214: Senior Riley Shin shot even-par 36 for the Lancers in the nonleague match at Meadowlark Golf Course.

Marina (0-5) remains in search of its first win of the season.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 233, Ocean View 255: The Seahawks dropped their fourth consecutive decision in falling to 1-4 overall and in the Orange Coast League following Wednesday’s match at their home course of David L. Baker Golf Course.

Ocean View plays host to first-place St. Margaret’s in its next match on Monday.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 214, Tarbut V’Torah 228: The Tritons improved to 4-4 overall with a win over the Lions on Wednesday at Newport Beach Golf Course.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Los Alamitos 3, Corona del Mar 0: Kaia Herweg had 10 kills to lead the Griffins to a 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 sweep of the Sea Kings on Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover match at Los Alamitos High.

Ava Kelly provided 16 assists, and Kylie Jenkins contributed 14 digs for Los Alamitos (13-3), which has a 10-match winning streak.

Corona del Mar (16-12) will begin its Wave League schedule on Friday at Edison. Reiley Murphy paced the Sea Kings with 14 kills and 11 digs. Kirsten Dauderman added 13 digs and two aces against the Griffins.

Newport Harbor 3, Edison 2: Anabel Kotzakov had 21 kills and eight service aces, as the host Sailors rallied past the Chargers 22-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-15, 15-8 on Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover match.

Laine Briggs added 14 kills and three aces for Newport Harbor (9-4), which had 25 aces as a team. Malia Thorne also had eight kills.

Drue Coberly handed out 31 assists to go with 12 digs and three aces, and Tegan Glenn provided seven assists, four aces, two kills and two blocks for the Sailors.

Edison (12-14) had a three-match winning streak snapped.

Laguna Beach 3, Marina 1: Eva Travis had 27 kills and 1½ blocks to lead the Breakers over the Vikings 25-15, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21 on Wednesday in a Sunset Conference crossover match at Laguna Beach High.

Kyra Zaengle had 17 kills, nine digs and two block assists for Laguna Beach (10-11). Sara Johnson also had four kills and four block assists, and Grace Christian distributed 33 assists.

Marina dropped to 12-8 overall in its final match before the start of Wave League competition.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Irvine 8, Edison 5: The visiting Chargers were outscored 3-0 in the second quarter, accounting for the difference in Wednesday’s nonleague match.

Edison dropped to 3-4, having suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Ocean View 11, Los Amigos 7: The Seahawks ran their winning streak to three matches in handling the Lobos on their home courts in a nonleague contest on Wednesday.

Ocean View (3-2) will begin Golden West League play against Segerstrom on the road on Tuesday.
