Boys’ Water Polo: Newport Harbor’s Stevens is Sunset League’s best

Newport Harbor High senior Dan Stevens has earned Sunset League Player of the Year honors for boys’ water polo.

Stevens is joined on the Sunset League first team by senior teammates Curtis Fink, Preston Lee and Andrew Silvers. Newport Harbor Coach Robert Lynn was named league Coach of the Year.

Newport Harbor senior goalie Wyatt Muller, as well as juniors Mitchell Mendoza and Ryan Warde, earned second-team all-league honors.

Stevens, a standout defender and co-captain bound for Harvard, was second on the Sailors in both goals (49) and steals (35). He also had 14 assists. He helped Newport (21-7, 5-0 in league) win its third straight league title and advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinals. Newport Harbor also won the S&R Sport Cup, defeating league rival Los Alamitos in the championship match.

Fink led Newport Harbor with 56 goals and 50 steals, adding 22 assists. Lee, the team’s other co-captain, had a team-best 32 assists and added 30 goals and 24 steals.

It is the second straight first-team all-league selection for Stevens and Fink.
