CdM eighth-grade girls win volleyball championship

The Corona del Mar eighth-grade girls’ volleyball team defeated Dwyer from Huntington Beach in two sets to claim the Coastal Athletic League championship at Harbor Day School on Feb. 11.

CdM beat Sowers, another team from Huntington Beach, in the semifinals the day before in a thrilling three-set match. CdM closed out that match with a 15-13 win in the third set.

Steve Astor, who is also the head varsity coach for CdM, coached the eighth-grade girls to victory. His assistant coaches were Payton Carter and Sydney Alacano, who are seniors at CdM and played on the varsity team.

Players on the championship team include Maya Avital, Megan Chelf, Sara Ensign, Megan Fisk, Kristen Frederick, Brooke Healy, Shawna Larsen, Lila Madison, Emily O’Connell, Megan Peterson, Maya Santchell, Nikki Senske, Trinity Rodman, Anna Wilde, Michelle Won and Ava Yacoel.
