Briefs: UCI’s Breslin singled out

UC Irvine junior Michael Breslin has been named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

The goalkeeper posted two shutouts as the No. 5-ranked Anteaters (10-1-2, 3-1-2 in conference) topped UC Davis and Sacramento State last week.

His four saves on Thursday helped UCI hand UC Davis its first loss of the season with a 1-0 verdict.

In Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sacramento State, Breslin, who has four shutouts this season, had three saves.

He has an 0.87 goals-against average this season. He has yet to allow a goal in four home games this season.

UCI will play host to Cal State Fullerton, guided by former UCI head man George Kuntz, on Saturday at 7 p.m.

UCI’s Lee lauded

UC Irvine senior Allison Lee has been named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week in women’s volleyball.

The 6-foot outside hitter led the Anteaters to conference wins over UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week.

She had a career-high 24 digs, 13 kills, two block assists and one ace in the five-set home win over UCSB on Friday.

In a home sweep of Cal Poly on Saturday, she contributed 15 digs, tied a career high with three aces and had two block assists.

Lee is second on the team in digs (239), blocks (39) and aces (28) and ranks third in kills (227).

Thompson claims honor

UC Irvine sophomore Isaiah Thompson has been selected Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s cross country.

Thompson won the 8,000-meter race at the 25th annual Vanguard Invitational Saturday with a time of 24 minutes, 51.4 seconds in the field of 142 runners at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa. His performance helped UCI to a second-place team finish.

This is the first weekly honor for Thompson, who was the Big West Freshman of the Year in men’s cross country last season.

UCI travels to Riverside Saturday for the Highlander Invitational at the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Course.

Ex-Sailor honored

Newport Harbor High product Chris Whitelegge, a junior goalkeeper at UC Santa Barbara, was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week in men’s water polo on Sept. 15.

The 6-foot-1 standout helped UCSB, then ranked No. 7, earn two wins that week. The Gauchos defeated then-No. 10-ranked Pepperdine and then-No. 9-ranked UC San Diego.

Whitelegge had eight saves and one steal in the 12-6 win over Pepperdine and had eight saves, two steals and one assist in a 13-10 triumph over UCSD.
