Estancia’s Sergio Gutierrez grabs Orange Coast League MVP in boys’ soccer

Estancia High senior midfielder Sergio Gutierrez earned the Orange Coast League MVP award for helping the boys’ soccer team to its first league title since the 2009-10 season.

Estancia senior forward Andy Martinez was named the Offensive MVP, Costa Mesa junior defender Tristan Trepas the Defensive MVP and Estancia senior Yonathan Lopez the Goalkeeper of the Year.

Gutierrez, Martinez and Lopez led the Eagles (14-4-6, 6-0-4 in league) to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs, where Estancia suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime at La Quinta.

Gutierrez, a repeat first-team selection, scored nine goals and assisted on eight others.

Martinez recorded 17 goals and 11 assists.

Trepas helped Costa Mesa (10-4-4, 4-2-4) place third in the league and qualify for the Division 4 playoffs. The Mustangs’ season ended with a 3-2 first-round loss in overtime against Oxnard.

The first team also featured Estancia junior Eric Avonce, senior Charlie Segura, sophomore Marcos Arreola and senior Nico Ramirez, Costa Mesa junior Raphael Dominguez and senior Alexis Garcia, and Laguna Beach seniors Sterling Butler and Carson Cushing.

The Breakers (9-6-4, 4-3-3) placed fourth in the league.

Members of the second team included Estancia senior Luis Millan, sophomore Aaron Neri and junior Gerardo Leon, as well as Costa Mesa senior Victor Victoriano, sophomore Angel Fuentes and senior Pablo Martinez, and Laguna Beach sophomore Jet Rocha and senior Jacob Pietig.
