High school roundup: Laguna Beach boys’ basketball stays perfect in league

Senior guard Blake Burzell finished with 21 points, helping the Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team blow out host Estancia 78-29 and claim the outright Orange Coast League championship on Tuesday night.

Charlie Rounaghi and Grady Morgan each had 13 points for Laguna Beach (24-3, 9-0 in league), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA poll, and Nolan Naess added 12.

The Breakers can claim an undefeated league title with a win on Thursday, when they play at Saddleback at 7 p.m.

Estancia (16-9, 5-4 in league) closes out the regular season at home with rival Costa Mesa (12-10, 6-3) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Eagles are tied for third place in league with Godinez, both are a game back of the Mustangs.

The top three teams in league automatically qualify for the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Ocean View 66, Santa Ana 58: Senior center Mehkel Harvey recorded 20 points, 20 rebounds, seven blocked shots, two assists and one steal for the visiting Seahawks, who improved to 9-0 in the Golden West League on Tuesday.

Ocean View’s Paul Head had 21 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

The Seahawks (22-4 overall), No. 4 in Division 3AA, can go undefeated in league for the third year in a row with a win at Orange on Thursday. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.

Corona del Mar 68, Woodbridge 55: Senior guard Kevin Kobrine finished with 30 points in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League game, helping the Sea Kings clinch a berth into the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Jack Garza added 15 points for CdM, which is 6-3 in league and tied for second place with Beckman.

The Sea Kings (16-10 overall) close out the regular season at Irvine on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Godinez 50, Costa Mesa 44: The Mustangs lost on the road in Orange Coast League play on Tuesday.

Costa Mesa can secure second place in league and a berth into the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs with a victory at Estancia on Thursday. The Mustangs are looking to sweep the Battle for the Bell series.

Los Alamitos 67, Huntington Beach 53: The visiting Oilers dropped to 0-9 in the Sunset League on Tuesday.

Huntington Beach hosts rival Edison (7-2 in league) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Chargers can win at least a share of their second straight league title with a win.

Santiago 73, Los Amigos 43: The visiting Lobos fell to 9-16 overall and 1-8 in the Garden Grove League on Tuesday.

Los Amigos wraps up the season at La Quinta on Thursday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Marina 3, Newport Harbor 1: Senior captain Erika Sosa scored twice on Tuesday, helping the visiting Vikings secure third place in the Sunset League and a CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff berth, the program’s first postseason appearance since 2009.

Marina (16-5-4, 5-4-1 in league) will learn of its playoff opponent on Monday, when the CIF Southern Section releases the brackets.

Freshman Kaitlyn Paculba also scored, while junior Kellie Hallworth and senior Autumn Stewart had assists for the Vikings.

Scout Farmer scored for Newport Harbor (8-11-4, 1-7-2), which failed to advance to the playoffs.

Ocean View 6, Orange 0: Analisa Chavez scored three goals for the Seahawks, who finished in third place in the Golden West League after Tuesday’s finale on the road.

Micayla Shook and Chelsea Hardgrave also scored for Ocean View (5-11-4, 4-3-3 in league), which clinched a CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoff berth.

Los Alamitos 3, Huntington Beach 1: The host Oilers finished in fourth place in the Sunset League after Tuesday league finale.

Cina Wilson scored off Alijah Oliver’s assist for Huntington Beach (13-9-4, 4-4-2 in league), which will apply for an at-large berth to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, coach Raul Ruiz said.

League champion Los Alamitos, the top-ranked team in Division 1, finished 8-0-2 in league.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Woodbridge 40, Corona del Mar 30: Junior center Tatiana Bruening had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Sea Kings in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League home game.

CdM (10-14, 5-4 in league) is locked into the third seed in league. The Sea Kings will wrap up the regular season at Irvine on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Ocean View 50, Santa Ana 36: The host Seahawks clinched a Golden West League automatic playoff berth on Tuesday night.

The win completes a season sweep of Santa Ana. It also guarantees that the third-place Seahawks will finish no lower than their current standing in the league.

Ocean View (17-8, 6-3 in league) finishes its regular-season schedule at home against Orange on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Oxford Academy 52, Sage Hill 35: The visiting Patriots completed the season sweep of the Lightning in Academy League play on Tuesday.

Sage Hill (16-9, 9-3 in league) finishes its regular season as the second-place team out of the league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Costa Mesa 13, JSerra 3: Sofia Rice scored four goals for the visiting Mustangs in Tuesday’s nonleague game.

Sey Currie and Kaylie Tickenoff both scored three goals for Costa Mesa (14-14), with Harper Yeager scoring twice and Michelle Kiefer adding a goal.

The Mustangs play host to rival Estancia in the Battle for the Bell game on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
