High school roundup: Laguna Beach boys’ basketball finishes perfect in Orange Coast League

Senior guards Blake Burzell and Grady Morgan each scored 17 points as the Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team beat host Saddleback 91-42 to finish 10-0 in the Orange Coast League on Thursday night.

Charlie Rounaghi and Willie Rounaghi both had 11 points for league champion Laguna Beach (25-3 overall), which had 31 assists.

Nolan Naess scored 10 points as Laguna Beach earned its 12thstraight win.

The CIF Southern Section playoffs start next week for the Breakers, who are ranked No. 2 in the Division 3AA poll. Brackets will be released Sunday.

Corona del Mar 73, Irvine 51: Senior guard Kevin Kobrine scored 14 points for the visiting Sea Kings, who finished alone in second place in the Pacific Coast League on Thursday.

CdM (17-10, 7-3 in league) came into the final game tied for second with Beckman, but the Patriots lost 72-55 to Northwood (9-1 in league), the outright league champion.

John Humphreys and Jack Garza each scored 13 points for CdM, which opens play in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs next week.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Estancia 1, Costa Mesa 1: Sophomore Marcos Arreola scored for the Orange Coast League champion Eagles in their final regular-season game Thursday on the road.

Estancia (13-3-6, 6-0-4 in league), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 3, will learn of its first-round playoff opponent when the brackets are released Monday.

Costa Mesa (10-4-4, 4-2-4) finished tied for second in the league with Saddleback (5-4-1 in league), with each team having 16 points. The Mustangs advance to the Division 4 playoffs and are currently ranked No. 9 in that division.

Laguna Beach 3, Saddleback 1: John Ford scored twice for the Breakers in their Orange Coast finale at home Thursday.

Jet Rocha had a goal for Laguna Beach (9-6-4, 4-3-3 in league), which finished fourth in league with 15 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 56, Irvine 45: Junior center Tatiana Bruening had a game-high 19 points with 14 rebounds and six blocked shots for the visiting Sea Kings in their Pacific Coast League finale on Thursday.

Junior small forward Malia Halafuka added eight points and 13 rebounds, and junior guard Samantha Uehara chipped in with 13 points.

CdM (11-14, 6-4 in league) will enter the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs as the third seed out of the league.

Ocean View 60, Orange 34: The host Seahawks won their final Golden West League game of the season on Thursday.

Ocean View (18-8, 7-3 in league) heads to the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs as the third seed in its league.
