High school roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ lacrosse outlasts San Juan Hills

Adena Rothbard had four goals, including the game winner, as the Newport Harbor High girls’ lacrosse team beat visiting San Juan Hills 15-14 in a nonleague match Thursday.

Mariana Miller had five goals for the Sailors (2-2), and Joelle Rothbard scored four.

Willa Rath made nine saves for Newport Harbor, which plays host to Utah’s Park City on Saturday at 3 p.m.

BASEBALL

Fountain Valley 10, Dana Hills 0: Senior Nathan Wilson and sophomore Cole Wentz combined to throw a shutout in the host Barons’ Loara Tournament game on Thursday.

Noah Amenta finished three for four with two runs batted in for the Barons (3-3), and Jake Brooks was three for three with three RBIs.

Fountain Valley collected 13 hits.

Wentz was two for three with an RBI.

Santa Margarita 5, Edison 4: Senior Connor Aoki went two for four with a home run for the Chargers in a Loara Tournament game on the road Thursday.

Aoki tied the game at 4-4 with a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning.

Matt Swartz was two for three with a run batted in for Edison (3-4), while Blake Morton had a home run and two RBIs.

Cypress 9, Marina 6: Vikings junior Cory Lewis went three for four in Thursday’s Loara Tournament game.

Braden Wylde had multiple hits for Marina (3-3).

SOFTBALL

Westminster 8, Laguna Beach 5: The host Breakers (2-3) fell to the Lions in a La Quinta Aztec Challenge game on Thursday.

Anaheim 23, Los Amigos 1: The visiting Lobos gave up 10 runs in the first inning of Thursday’s La Quinta Aztec Challenge game.

Alyssa Ledesma and Carolina Alcozar had hits for Los Amigos (2-1).

Cerritos 7, Newport Harbor 0: Eliana Gottlieb, Clare Austin and Kendall Kelly had hits for the host Sailors in Thursday’s nonleague contest.

Newport Harbor (2-5) was shutout for the second consecutive game.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Laguna Beach 3, San Clemente 1: The host Breakers bounced back with a 25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 28-26 nonleague victory on Thursday night.

Laguna Beach improved to 4-4 overall.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 12, Crean Lutheran 6: Josh Watkins and Andy Myers swept in singles for the Sailors on Thursday in a nonleague road match.

The team of Nick Nataupsky and Prescott Cook swept in doubles for Newport Harbor (4-1), which plays at Sunny Hills on Monday.

Ocean View 9, Costa Mesa 9 (Ocean View wins 83-79 on games): Hritik Ronvelia and Nathan Trieu each won twice in singles for Costa Mesa in Thursday’s nonleague match.

Costa Mesa (1-3) plays at Esperanza on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Ocean View improved to 1-1.

BOYS’ GOLF

Edison 207, Trabuco Hills 223: Junior Tony DiBernardo fired a three-over-par 39 in a nonleague match, earning medalist honors and helping the visiting Chargers improve to 5-0 at Trabuco Canyon’s Dove Canyon Golf Club on Thursday.

Edison travels to play St. Margaret’s at Marbella Country Club in San Juan Capistrano on Tuesday.

Fountain Valley 198, Lakewood 218: Junior Josh Vo led the Barons with an even-par 36 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach on Thursday.

Fountain Valley’s Kevin Hinh shot a 37.

Ocean View 239, Orange 248: Freshman Michael Kosai was the individual medalist with a nine-over-par 45 for the Seahawks at Mile Square Golf Course on Thursday.

Kolby Lane had a 47 for Ocean View (2-0).

ICE HOCKEY

Newport-Mesa 4, Capistrano United 0: Nicolas Carpino had a hat-trick for the Ice Kings in the semifinals of the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League Junior Varsity Division at The Rinks Lakewood on Thursday.

The top-seeded Ice Kings (12-1-3-0) will play Carlsbad Pacific Ridge (12-2-1-1) in the championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday at The Rinks Anaheim Ice. Pacific Ridge beat Upland Christian 5-1 in the semifinals on Thursday.

Boden Lazio had a goal and an assist for Ice Kings, and Joseph Cianfrani added three assists.

Goaltender Aaron Parsons picked up his third consecutive shutout, making 30 saves.
