High School Roundup: Huntington Beach girls’ basketball falls to Bishop Montgomery in Garden Grove Classic final

Meghan McIntyre had a team-high 17 points, but the Huntington Beach High girls’ basketball team lost to Torrance Bishop Montgomery 78-58 on Saturday in the championship game of the Garden Grove Classic.

The game featured the two teams that met in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A final in 2017, a game that the Knights won 41-38.

In Saturday’s meeting at Garden Grove High, Bella Serrano added 15 points for the Oilers. Alyssa Real and Marisa Tanga each had eight points.

Serrano was selected to the all-tournament team.

Huntington Beach (11-5) will travel to Laguna Beach for a Sunset Conference crossover game on Thursday.

Yorba Linda 44, Newport Harbor 37: Emma Fults had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Sailors in the consolation final of the Larry Doyle/Dan Wiley Tournament on Saturday at Edison High.

Willa Rath had six points and 11 rebounds, and Chloe Swanson added six points and 10 rebounds for Newport Harbor (10-10).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 50, Santa Barbara 37: John Humphreys finished with 20 points, leading the Sea Kings to the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic title at Santa Barbara High on Saturday.

Jack Stone contributed 12 points for CdM (13-5), and Jack Garza added 11 points.

The Sea Kings face Fountain Valley in a Sunset Conference crossover game at home on Friday at 7 p.m.

Palos Verdes 58, Edison 54 (OT): Aiden Garnett and Kaden Headington earned all-tournament team honors for the Chargers in the Rancho Mirage Holiday Invitational Design Pro Division championship game Saturday.

Edison (14-6) hosts Marina on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a Sunset Conference crossover game.

Marina 84, Buena Park 47: Ethan Barnella scored 21 points in the Vikings’ nonleague home game on Saturday.

Eric Hodgkins had 15 points for Marina (10-9), which plays at Edison in a Sunset Conference crossover game on Friday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Los Alamitos 2, Edison 0: The Griffins scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the Excalibur Cup title match Saturday at Silverlakes Sports Complex in Norco.

Edison (8-4-1) hosts rival Marina in a Sunset Conference crossover match Thursday at 5 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Newport Harbor 8, Carlsbad 5: Brooke Banta had three goals, two assists and two steals for the host Sailors in the Bill Barnett Holiday Cup fifth-place match Saturday.

Olivia Giolas had two goals and three ejections earned for Newport Harbor (7-3), while Taylor Smith, Annie Rankin and Linnea Kelly also scored. Erin Ross made 11 saves.

Earlier Saturday, Newport Harbor upset Mater Dei 7-6 in a fifth-place semifinal. Rankin and Kili Skibby each scored three goals.

The Sailors host Rosary on Thursday in a nonleague match.
