High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ basketball improves to 21-1 with win at Los Alamitos

Robbie Spooner had 15 points as the Newport Harbor High boys’ basketball team won 63-56 in its Surf League opener Friday night at Los Alamitos.

Dayne Chalmers had 14 points and eight rebounds for Newport Harbor (21-1), ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA poll. Levi Darrow scored 12 points and converted all eight of his free throws in the fourth quarter.

Sam Barela had 13 points and seven assists for the Sailors, who will have a first-place showdown at Edison (16-8, 1-0 in league) on Wednesday.

Costa Mesa 72, Saddleback 28: Senior guard Nico Dasca had 23 points for the Mustangs in an Orange Coast League game Friday on the road.

Osman Hefner added 20 points for first-place Costa Mesa (9-10, 4-0 in league), and Bryson Jack had 10. Tre Villalpando had seven assists.

Costa Mesa plays a league game at Santa Ana on Wednesday.

Estancia 66, Orange 54: Mason Richards scored 22 points for the Eagles in Friday’s Orange Coast League road game.

Jaycen Cash scored 21 points for Estancia (12-10, 3-1 in league), and Jake Covey had 13. The Eagles are alone in second place in the league after Santa Ana lost to Calvary Chapel on Friday.

Sage Hill 63, Rowland Heights Southlands Christian 39: Ryan Hossienzadeh and Cooper Green each scored 14 points for the Lightning in Friday’s Academy League game.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 5AA, improved to 13-8 overall and 3-0 in the league after defeating the No. 5-ranked team in Division 4A.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Pacifica Christian Orange County 1, Claremont Webb 0: Leila Bahnsen scored on Brooklyn Motske’s assist for the Tritons in Friday’s nonleague match on the road.

Pacifica Christian, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 6, improved to 11-1 this season.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Estancia 4, Orange 2: Miguel Pena had two goals to lead the host Eagles on Friday in an Orange Coast League match.

Fernando Martinez and Chapin Camberos also scored for the Eagles (10-5-2, 2-1-1 in league).

Fountain Valley 1, Laguna Beach 0: Sebastian Rus scored for the visiting Barons’ in Friday’s Surf League opener.

Fountain Valley, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, improved to 12-4 on the season, while Laguna Beach fell to 3-5-3.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Huntington Beach 50, Marina 26: Meghan McIntyre had 15 points to pace the visiting Oilers in Friday’s Sunset Conference crossover game.

Andie Payne added six points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots for Huntington Beach (15-6), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 2AA. Alyssa Real chipped in with 11 points.

Katie Nguyen had seven points and eight rebounds, and Greta Graeler added four points and six rebounds for the Vikings (14-9), ranked No. 13 in Division 3A.
