High School Roundup: Newport Harbor baseball reaches Newport Elks Tournament title game

Seniors John Olmstead and Mac Briggs each hit home runs as the Newport Harbor High baseball team beat Capistrano Valley Christian 10-4 on Wednesday in a Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division semifinal game at home.

Olmstead drove in three runs and Briggs two runs for Newport Harbor (4-0), which will play Trabuco Hills Friday in the Foothill Division championship game at 3 p.m. at site to be determined.

Braham Duncan and Clay Liolios were each three for four for the Sailors. Cameron Mahaffy improved to 2-0, allowing four earned runs on five hits in six innings pitched. He struck out nine and walked one.

Corona del Mar 7, Paramount 0: Jarrett Thompson threw five shutout innings for the host Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division game.

Thompson (1-0) gave up two hits and struck out four. Kieran Sidebotham was three for three with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Reece Berger and Luc Stuka also had two hits each for CdM (4-0-1), which closes out the tournament on Friday.

SOFTBALL

Fountain Valley 6, San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea 5: Kayla Vidal drove in Brooke Pace and Samara Ortega with a stand-up triple to send the host Barons to a walk-off win in Wednesday’s Savanna Tournament game.

CJ Garcia and Vidal handled the duties in the pitching circle.

The Barons (1-1) will host Ocean View (0-3) in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m., with the next game to follow at noon.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Fountain Valley 3, Ocean View 0: Marcelo Ponce had a team-high 10 kills, and the Barons defeated the visiting Seahawks 25-17, 26-24, 25-16 on Wednesday in a nonleague match.

James Templin had nine kills, and Tyler Huffmire added four blocks for the Barons (1-0).

Ocean View (1-1) opened the season with a four-set win at Saddleback on Tuesday.
