Ocean View falls at Segerstrom in Golden West League opener

Share

The Segerstrom High football announcer momentarily slipped up early in the second half.

A couple of times, he called Segerstrom senior running back Kishon Allen by the name of Keyshawn Johnson, the former USC and NFL wide receiver.

Allen only caught one pass Friday night in the Jaguars’ Golden West League opener against visiting Ocean View, but he did showcase some big-time athletic ability.

He scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as Segerstrom beat Ocean View 28-13 in the Jaguars’ homecoming game.

Allen finished with 14 carries for 141 yards and the pair of scores. Both came in the first half, from seven and 63 yards, respectively. On the second touchdown, he found the corner running left and was gone down the visitors’ sideline.

“Usually, when we play teams they fly up,” Allen said. “Coach was like, ‘You’ve got to cut up and just make something happen.’ So I cut up, the guy was coming at me and I hit him with a stiff-arm. I saw green grass, and that was it, really. It started with the O-line just doing everything they could.”

Segerstrom (5-1), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 11, responded after Ocean View scored the first touchdown of the game. Junior Noah Hickman led the Seahawks on a 79-yard drive, capped when he found senior receiver Nathaniel Washington on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 4:18 remaining in the first quarter.

But the Seahawks (4-2), ranked No. 3 in Division 13, gave up touchdowns on three of Segerstrom’s final four drives of the first half. First Allen had a seven-yard scamper, then the 63-yard run. The last touchdown came just before the half, after a high pass by Hickman was intercepted by Segerstrom’s Keith Morales and returned to the Ocean View 48-yard line.

Five plays later, Segerstrom senior quarterback Sagel Simon scored on a one-yard keeper, and the Jaguars had a 21-7 halftime advantage.

Ocean View went on a 16-play, 94-yard drive on its first possession of the second half, capping it when Hickman found 6-foot-5 senior tight end Adam Meyer in the back of the end zone. Meyer made an athletic leaping catch to convert a fourth-and-goal from the 4. Though the conversion failed, the Seahawks had made it a one-possession game again.

But they wouldn’t score again. Morales came up with his second interception near the goal line on the first play of the fourth quarter. Then he ran it in from five yards out with 9:02 remaining, giving Segerstrom a 28-13 advantage.

The Seahawks lost starting senior running back Noah De Loera (16 carries for 73 yards) to cramps late in the third quarter, and Hickman rolled his ankle on his team’s final offensive play, when Ocean View turned it over on downs from the Segerstrom 18-yard line with less than two minutes to go.

“We’ve got a lot of guys banged up,” Ocean View coach Luis Nunez said. “We’re a school of 1,300, and we’re playing schools with 2,600 or 2,700 kids … We’ve just got a lot of guys going two ways, and we ran out of gas tonight. The guys came out in the second half and they battled, but turnovers were the difference today.”

Nunez said he thought his defense, which got a fumble recovery from Washington, stepped up in the second half. But it was still a loss to open league play, and it won’t get easier.

Next week, Ocean View plays host to defending league champion Santa Ana, the No. 5 team in Division 12.

“We’ve got to regroup,” Nunez said. “It’s not going to be easy, and the kids know it’s not going to be easy. We’ve got Santa Ana next week, they’re going to be big and they’re going to be physical. But we’ve got to regroup, got to get a key win in league. Each game’s going to be a battle.”
