Newport’s Spitz wins ‘C’ final in 200 freestyle at Speedo Junior National Swimming Championships

Newport Harbor High incoming junior Ayla Spitz won the “C” final in the women’s 200 meter freestyle Friday at the Speedo Junior National Swimming Championships in East Meadow, New York.

Spitz, who swims club for Irvine Novaquatics, finished 17th in the event overall, touching in 2 minutes, 1.90 seconds. The time was more than a second faster than her preliminary mark.

In the 100 backstroke, Spitz made the “C” final Friday but chose not to swim it. Her prelim time was 1:03.75. Spitz already finished 13th in the 100 freestyle on Tuesday night, in the “B” final. She touched in 56.51 seconds.

Another local swimmer for Novaquatics at Junior Nationals was Fountain Valley High incoming senior Shayla Erickson. Erickson placed 80th in the 200 free, with a prelims time of 2:07.60.

The meet concludes Saturday with finals in the women’s 200 individual medley, 1500 freestyle, 50 free and 4x100 medley relay, as well as the men’s 200 IM, 50 free and 800 free.
