The UPS Store defeated Bushards, 5-0, in a competitive, quick and mostly error-free Laguna Beach Little League AAA division playoff game.
Jack Wills pitched five scoreless innings for UPS and Tyler Jackson closed the game with excellent pitching in the sixth.
UPS jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Justin Holm started the inning with a single to center field. Two outs later, Connor Coscino and Kegan Babick drew walks and then Wills hit a double to left field to score Holm and Coscino.
In the fourth inning, Ryan Blaser bunted safely, went to second on an overthrow, stole third and scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Tyler Cheves to make the score, 3-0. UPS added two insurance runs in the fifth on walks to Carson Cushing, Coscino, Wills and Jackson, and Cameron Garcia was hit by a pitch to force home the final run.
The story of the day was the efficient pitching of Wills and the excellent defense of UPS. Blaser made two great catches in center field. Coscino had three putouts at second base, Garcia and Babick played third base and both players had excellent plays in the field. Cheves and Holm shared duties at first base and played flawlessly. Cushing caught the entire game for UPS and was phenomenal, once again. Jake Onodera and Wesley Witteman also made nice plays in the field.
UPS will play in the AAA division championship game Tuesday against the winner of the Bushards-Morgan Stanley elimination game.
