Five Breakers set for All-Star match

Four Laguna Beach High volleyball athletes will have one final hurrah on the court today.

Newport Harbor High is the site of today’s Orange County All-Star Volleyball matches. The girls’ event begins at 6 p.m., followed by the boys’ contest at 7:30 p.m. The matches pit senior players from schools in south Orange County against those in north county.

Representing Laguna in the girls’ match are outside hitter Paulette Grand Pre and setter Alex Rieckhoff. Laguna players on the South boys’ squad are setter Travis Woloson, outside hitter Scottie Chapel and middle Reed Thompson.

Lance Stewart will serve as a coach of the South boys’ team.

Fiesta Night celebration

Laguna Beach Little League’s annual Fiesta Night is today at Riddle Field.

The schedule includes an awards ceremony, T-Ball exhibition, dinner, a home run derby and the league’s first chili cook-off. The special guest pitcher for the Home Run Derby is Laguna Beach High baseball Coach Jeff Sears.

Thalia Street surf event is Saturday

Thalia Street in Laguna Beach is the setting Saturday for the second Surfout Surfathon to benefit Costa Verde International School.

The surfathon is from 2 and 4:30 p.m. An after-party will be held at Mozambique restaurant in Laguna Beach, hosted by James Pribram and Jon Rose.

Thalia Street is just one of three locations celebrating World Environment Day on Saturday. Surfathons also will be held in Sayulita, Mexico, and Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Summer baseball starts Wednesday

The Laguna Beach High baseball program begins its summer season Wednesday. Breakers Coach Jeff Sears said the two Laguna teams will play anywhere from 15 to 20 games between them through July 22.

Incoming freshmen interested in the summer program and clinic can obtain more information by registering through the city of Laguna Beach or by contacting Sears at the school.
