Alumni may clash

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Two former Newport Harbor High standouts, Misty May-Treanor and April Ross, appear on course to meet in the women’s final of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Huntington Beach Open.

The top-seeded team of May-Treanor and Nicole Branagh and the second-seeded duo of Ross and Jen Kessy will play in opposite semifinal matches today at 8:45 a.m.

Gates open at 7:45 a.m. for the tournament site just south of the Huntington Beach Pier. The women’s final is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2. The men’s final will follow at 1 p.m. and will be shown live on ABC. Tickets are available on-site or at www.avp.com.

May-Treanor and Branagh take on sixth-seeded Angie Akers and Tyra Turner in their semifinal.

Ross and Kessy will face third-seeded Elaine Youngs and Rachel Scott for the chance to play in an AVP final for the first time this season.

On the mens’ side, Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and Corona del Mar resident Sean Rosenthal are in the semifinals today.
