Newport Beach Breakers: Davenport’s night has more meaning

It will be Ladies Night at The Tennis Club in Newport Beach, and the Breakers will have two of the best American players of their respective generations there for the party.

The Breakers are teaming up with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Orange County Affiliate to present Ladies Night featuring Lindsay Davenport on July 15 at the Tennis Club, prior to the Breakers taking on the St. Louis Aces.

As part of the festivities leading up to the 7:15 p.m. match, the Breakers will hold a free women’s tennis clinic open to females of all ages who are attending the match. Davenport, the Laguna Beach resident and former world No. 1 player, will be in attendance, as will fellow former world No. 1 Billie Jean King, the World Team Tennis founder and Breakers co-owner who owns 39 combined Grand Slam singles and doubles titles.

Breakers Coach Trevor Kronemann and Breakers players Julie Ditty and Marie-Eve Pelletier will conduct the clinic. All females can register for the clinic from 5:15-5:30 p.m. at The Tennis Club in Newport Beach (1602 E. Pacific Coast Highway).

The clinic will take place from 5:30-6:15 p.m.

Davenport, a three-time Grand Slam singles winner who played for the Breakers in 2003 and 2008, will be playing for the Aces in the subsequent match. Tickets to the match against St. Louis are $17.50 and can be purchased by calling (714) 352-6301 or visiting https://www.newportbeachbreakers.com. Fans at the match are encouranged to wear pink clothes in support of breast cancer research and awareness. A portion of the proceeds from Ladies Night will benefit the Komen Orange County Affiliate.

“We are thrilled to continue our annual Ladies Night tradition by partnering with a worthy foundation like Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” Breakers executive director Jeff Purser said. “We are all aware that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women from ages 40-59 and we are happy to join forces with the Komen for the Cure Orange County Affiliate and lend our support to its fight. Komen for the Cure’s presence at our July 15 match will certainly raise awareness and educate people on breast cancer.”

Komen for the Cure is a nonprofit public charity and has invested nearly $1 billion to support its efforts. It is the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

The Breakers open their 2010 home season at The Tennis Club on July 6, against the Sacramento Capitals. They have seven home matches.
