Lots of local flavor at tourney

Two matches featuring local high school players highlight today’s action in The Tennis Club Junior Tournament known as, “The War by the Shore,” at the Tennis Club Newport Beach.

In boys’ 18 singles, No. 2 seed Shane Korber, who will be a senior at Corona del Mar High, will play against Jason Cernius, a senior-to-be at Newport Harbor, at 11 a.m. in a Round of 32 match. In another boys’ 18 singles round of 32 match, Pierce Stemler, a recent CdM graduate, faces Andrew Kurzweil, who will be a senior at Sage Hill School, at 9:30 a.m.

Ryan Peyton, a recent CdM graduate, is the top seed in boys’ 18 singles. He plays 11 a.m. today against Luke Mountain. The winners of the round of 32 matches play at 5 p.m. in the round of 16.

James Zillman, a Costa Mesa resident who is the No. 3 seed in boys’ 16 singles, starts play today in the round of 32 at 3:30 p.m.

Alastair Hurry, a Corona del Mar resident, also received a first-round bye as the No. 5 seed in boys’ 14 singles. He starts play today at 2 p.m.

No. 7-seeded Reese Stadler of Costa Mesa competes today in a boys’ 14 singles round of 32 match against Matthew Wong at 2 p.m. Austin Di Giulio of Newport Beach also competes today at 2 p.m. in boys’ 14 singles.

Newport Harbor junior-to-be Blake Bakkila, the No. 7 seed in girls’ 16 singles, plays against Molly Brooks today at 2 p.m. in a round of 32 match.

Newport Coast resident Jenna Moustafa, the No. 3 seed in girls’ 14 singles, plays today at 2 p.m. in a round of 16 match.

Kate Knight of Newport Beach is the No. 7 seed in girls’ 14 singles. She’ll play against Jessica Folsom today at 11 a.m.

Several other local players are also in the tournament, which also features doubles competition.
