Locals capture honors

UC Irvine senior Corey Attaway and junior Miguel Ibarra were named Big West Players of the Week Monday.

Attaway earned Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors after guiding the UCI defense to a pair of shutouts against Gonzaga and Loyola Chicago. Attaway and the ‘Eater defense didn’t allow a shot on goal in either of the two matches last week. Attaway also scored the game-winning goal against Loyola Chicago. Monday he was named the UC Irvine College Classic MVP after scoring the game-winner against Wisconsin as well.

Ibarra was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week after his three-assist performance on the opening week. Ibarra’s ball placement on his crosses allowed three UCI defenders to score the opening week. He assisted on both game-winners and was also named to the UCI College Classic All-Tournament team Monday.

Herrera receives award

Vanguard senior goalkeeper Trevor Herrera was named Golden West Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after making four saves and allowing only one goal in two games last week.

He gave the Lions 45 minutes of scoreless work in goal during Vanguard’s 2-0 victory over Cal State San Marcos.

Against NCAA Division II No. 6-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, Herrera worked all 110 minutes of the double overtime tie. He had three saves and gave up one goal as the teams ended with a 1-1 stalemate.
