Seahawks continue to dominate

After coming off the previous week’s 32-7 victory against Rowland Heights, the Pee Wee Division of the Newport Mesa Seahawks, looked like it was going to start their second game off in the hole.

Instead, the Seahawks defeated Norwalk, 34-6.

After a booming kickoff, the Norwalk Saints ran the ball back all the way down to the Seahawks’ 10-yard line. But four times the Saints ran the ball looking to take an early lead, and four times the Seahawks defense held.

Defenders Blake Kormos, Kobe Benter, Jack Genova, Mitch Haly and Jake Jones denied the Saints the end zone, and the Seahawks took over the ball at their own two-yard line.

It did not take long to realize what the offensive game plan was for the Seahawks.

Tailback Anthony Battista was called upon again and again to carry the ball. The Seahawks ground attack took 12 plays and the balance of the first quarter, as they marched 98 yards to take the lead.

Offensive linemen Will Gehl, Danny Rodgers, Will Karambelas, Connor Brazeel and Berkley Bingham pushed the Saints defense back and opened holes all game long for their team.

The second quarter included more dominant defense with a long interception by cornerback Carson Poivre.

The Seahawks added a second score, with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chase Grabers to tight end Nick “Too Tall” Bauer to take a 12-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Saints hopes of catching up were dashed when Adam Freeman ran back a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown to make the score 18-0.

Kicker Carson Poivre made one of his two extra points, to make it 20-0 Seahawks.

At this point Norwalk was forced to take to the air to try and get some points on the board. Defensive backs Sutton Barabato, Stephen Menzia and Rich Vanis would have none of it and the shutout continued.

A 40-yard punt return by Freeman, and subsequent touchdown run by Battista, made it 26-0 going into the final period.

The fourth quarter featured another touchdown pass from Garbers to Bauer, and fumble recoveries by Kormos and Freeman to seal the win.

Injured player Jonathon White was thrilled at the victory, and jumped up and down on his one good leg to celebrate the Seahawks’ second win.

After the game, coaches John Genova, Grant Garbers, Tony Battista, Steve Brazeel and Greg White congratulated their team on a job well done. They are looking forward to a continued strong effort by the Seahawks next week.
