IRVINE — Junior Bello Alhassan scored the game-winner in the 88th minute for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Spencer Thompson assisted Alhassan. UCI (10-1-1, 3-0 in conference) responded from a 1-0 defict after the Mustangs scored in the fifth minute.

Senior Amani Walker scored on an assist from junior Miguel Ibarra.

COSTA MESA — Kevin Cornwall and Alejandro Lopez produced a goal and an assist each for the No. 5-ranked Lions in the nonconference match Saturday.

COSTA MESA — Lisa Morgan had nine kills and 14 digs for the Lions, who won the Golden State Athletic Conference match, 25-13, 25-17, 25-15, Saturday.

Ariel Strickler had 10 digs and Alexandra Leja had 28 assists for Vanguard (11-8, 3-7 in conference).

COSTA MESA — The Lions unranked in the NAIA top 25, earned the team title in the nine-team field that included No. 6-ranked The Master’s and No. 14-ranked Azusa Pacific at Fairview Park on Saturday.

Senior Christian de Glymes led Vanguard, finishing fourth among 123 runners. He finished the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 22 seconds.

Juniors Matt Johnson (ninth in 26:06), Jose Casillas (10th in 26:15), and Billy Mitchell (16th in 26:39) also stood out for Vanguard, as did sophomore Fernando Orozco, an Estancia High product, who was 23rd in 26:52.

MALIBU — Senior Brandon Johnson scored five goals to lead the No. 3-ranked Anteaters in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener Saturday.

Senior Tom Kruip chipped in three goals for UCI (11-3), which received four saves from senior Matt Johnson.

Vanguard Invitational

COSTA MESA — Junior Megan Williams placed seventh in the 131-runner field to lead the host Lions to a sixth-place team finish in the five-team field at Fairview Park on Saturday.

Williams finished the 5K course in 18 minutes, 11 seconds.

Junior Chelsea Van Cott (15th in 18:44), as well as sophomores Jazmine Reyes (29th in in 19:20) and Lauren Minnick (38th in 19:43), topped the Lions’ performers.

LA JOLLA — UC Irvine finished eighth as a team, led by sophomore Shelley Foerster, who was 25th in 24 minutes, 7.7 seconds on Saturday at UC San Diego.

UCI’s Maggie McDuffee was 29th in 24:19.6.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

IRVINE — Freshman Jeremy Dejno had 26 kills to lead the Anteaters to the 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12 win at the second annual UC Irvine International Men’s Volleyball Tournament at Bren Events Center Saturday.

The win marks the first for the Anteaters in international competition. Kevin Carroll had 17 kills and Daniel Stork had 62 assists.

The Anteaters fell to Korean Air Jumbos, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19, late Friday.

Freshman Nick West led UCI with 10 kills, hitting .529. Dejno had eight kills and freshman Scott Kevorken added six kills, three aces and three block assists. Stork had 30 assists.
