High School Roundup: Woodside produces

COSTA MESA — Senior Claire Woodside provided a highlight for the Estancia High girls’ tennis team in its 11-7 Orange Coast League victory over crosstown rival Costa Mesa Tuesday at Estancia.

Woodside, the Eagles’ No. 2 singles player, battled back from a 5-0 deficit to beat Costa Mesa No. 1 Ellen Im, 7-6, (7-5).

Estancia senior Lauren Hinson swept at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1, to improve her league record to 10-2.

Hinson trailed Im, 3-0, but came back to win, 6-4.

“She’s playing real well,” Estancia Coach Rachel de los Santos said of Hinson. “She’s had quite a few matches where she’s been down, and she fights her way back. She has good season so far and has pulled out some close wins for us.”

Estancia’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Christy Brown and senior Erin O’Neil swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.

The Eagles (5-6, 2-2 in league) play host to Saddleback today at 3:15 p.m.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sailors juniors Ricki Archie and Christina Young swept at No. 1 doubles to improve to 9-0 in the Sunset League Tuesday.

Archie and Young, who dropped just three games, improved to 33-2 overall.

Sophomore Megan Bathen and junior Mindy Wheeler swept at No. 2 doubles, while seniors Alex Aiello and Riley Mathies swept at No. 3 doubles for Newport Harbor (11-2, 4-0 in league).

The Sailors, ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division II coaches’ poll, play host to Fountain Valley Thursday.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Taylor Cordeiro, Mary Yeager and Alex Chandler each scored for the Sailors in the Sunset League win Tuesday.

Sydney King had three saves in goal for Newport Harbor (10-2, 3-1 in league), while the Sailors’ offense had 23 shots on goal.

The defensive play of seniors Natalie Swift and Beth Barnard was exceptional, said Coach Amanda Boyer.

Newport Harbor plays at rival Huntington Beach for first place in the Sunset League Thursday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Estancia def. Saddleback

COSTA MESA — Lily McClendon had 10 kills to lead the Eagles to a 25-10, 25-27, 25-22, 25-22 Orange Coast League victory Tuesday.

Charlotte Gaitan had 14 digs for Estancia (4-5, 2-1 in league), which plays at Calvary Chapel Thursday.

CORONA DEL MAR — Kennedy Grace had six kills while Morgan Boukather chipped in six digs and four kills in the host Sea Kings’ 25-13, 25-11, 25-13 Pacific Coast League victory Monday night.

Nikki Borchert had eight assists for the Sea Kings (13-4, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division I-A coaches’ poll.

CdM will play host to University today at 5:15 p.m.

HUNTINGTON BEACH —Natasha Sakraney had 13 kills and 17 digs to help lead the Lightning to a 26-24, 16-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-8 Academy League win Monday night.

Setter Alayna Lewis had 35 assists, Maggie Danner had 11 kills and Zoe Kreitenberg had eight kills for Sage Hill (7-12, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA coaches’ poll.

IRVINE — Chase Watson scored four goals for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center Tuesday.

Michael Ortleib added three goals, while Will Havercroft and Miles Carpenter scored two goals each for CdM (8-6, 3-0 in league).

Goalkeepers Bruce Bearer (five saves), A.J. Santa Maria (five) and Carlos Laube (one) anchored the Sea Kings’ defense.
