Xepoleas, Sage duo advance

Corona del Mar High’s Lynda Xepoleas and the Sage Hill School doubles team of Katie Bick and Rian Billingsley advanced to the round of 16 after qualifying on the first day of the CIF Tennis Individuals Friday.

Xepoleas opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Fabienne Nguyen of La Quinta, 6-0, 6-0, at University High. Xepoleas then took out Foothill’s Melissa Huang, 6-3, 6-1, to move on to the third round at The Tennis Club Newport Beach. That’s where she beat Edison’s Sarah Stadfelt, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16 Dec. 2 at Seal Beach Tennis Center.

Xepoleas, a senior bound for Purdue, finished second in the Pacific Coast League

Bick and Billingsley, the Academy League champions, will also be there after winning at The Tennis Club, their home court. The Lightning duo opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over an Elsinore doubles team. In the second round, Bick and Billingsley beat a Claremont tandem, 6-3, 6-3. Then, the Sage doubles team got past an Orange Lutheran duo, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round.

The first two rounds of singles play took place at University, and the third round at the Tennis Club. All doubles matches were at The Tennis Club.

Newport Harbor’s Christina Young and Ricki Archie, the Sunset League champions, reached the third round, where they lost to a University doubles team, 6-0, 6-0.

The Sailors duo beat a Capistrano Valley Christian tandem, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round and an Ayala duo, 6-4, 6-0, in the second round.

Newport Harbor’s Mindy Wheeler and Megan Bathen, second in the Sunset League, made it to the second round, losing to a Uni pair, 6-2, 6-1.

They beat a Santa Ana doubles team, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.

Newport Harbor’s Natalie Cernius, who finished runner-up in the Sunset League, lost in the first round to Leslie Chang of JSerra, 6-3, 6-3.
