Youth Scene: Newport Lightning wins tournament

The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s boys’ fifth-grade team continued its strong fall season winning the Focus Basketball Halloween Fest 2010 in Anaheim over Halloween weekend.

In pool play, the Lightning beat Air Force, 43-23, and edged Hype Basketball, 44-41, to get into the championship game where they faced Focus Basketball to win the 11U championship.

Ben Coffman, Kevin Kobrine and JT Murphy led the team in scoring all weekend while Cole Whitelaw, Jake Bashore, AJ Stefano and Will Black held down the paint with ferocious defensive rebounding. Morgan Cortens, Eann McKasson and Jack Fairon provided key baskets and played tremendous defense. The Lightning is coached by Nick Flamson.
