College Roundup: Cornwall leads VU to win

AZUSA — Sophomore Kevin Cornwall scored in the eighth minute of overtime to propel the Vanguard University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win in the first round of the NAIA Tournament at Golden State Athletic Conference rival Azusa Pacific Saturday.

The win puts the Lions (14-7), making their first NAIA Tournament appearance, into the round of 16. Vanguard will face No. 4-seeded Notre Dame College of Ohio (20-0) on Nov. 29 in Orange Beach, Ala. Notre Dame finished No. 2 in the final NAIA national poll.

APU (16-5-1), which fell to Vanguard in the GSAC Tournament title game on Nov. 13, opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Otkay Balut found the back of the net.

Vanguard tied it in the 83rd minute when junior Jack Plummer, who leads the team with 11 assists, netted his second goal of the campaign. Plummer converted an assist from junior Adam Holstein.

Cornwall, who leads the team with 16 goals, cashed in an assist from senior Tomislav Colic.

APU had an 18-10 advantage in shots and the Cougars' Joe Geletko did not make a save.

Senior Trevor Herrera had six saves for the Lions, who have now outscored foes, 58-13, this season.

Notre Dame trounced Davenport of Michigan, 5-0, Saturday to earn their second trip to the Sweet 16.


UC Irvine 85, Seattle 77

IRVINE — Patrick Rembert scored a career-high 21 points to lead four who scored in double figures for the Anteaters in the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer Saturday at the Bren Event Center.

Darren Moore had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Chris McNealy and Mike Wilder scored 11 points each for UCI (2-2).

The teams were tied at halftime, 37-37.

Cal State Northridge 109, Vanguard 66

NORTHRIDGE — Cameron Nettles led the Lions with 18 points in the nonconference game Saturday.

Both teams are now 1-2.


USC 11, UC Irvine 5

IRVINE — Doug Lindsay scored three goals for No. 5-ranked Anteaters, who concluded their regular season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday.

UCI (16-7, 4-4 in conference) finished tied for fifth with Pacific in the MPSF and will be the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament that begins Friday at Cal.

The No. 2-ranked Trojans improved to 23-2, 6-2.

Tom Kruip added two goals and Matt Johnson had eight saves for the 'Eaters.


Fresno State 67, UC Irvine 63

FRESNO — Jade Smith-Williams had 18 points and five assists to lead the Anteaters in the nonconference game Saturday.

Mikah Maly-Karros added 17 points for UCI (0-3).

Fresno State is 3-1.

Union 95, Vanguard 61

JACKSON, Tenn. — Chelsea Alfafara had 15 points and Molly Pfohl added 13 for the No. 5-ranked Lions in the Rotary Classic Saturday at Union.

The Bulldogs (6-0) are two-time NAIA national champions.
