MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 77, Marist 56

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Junior guard Derek Strings scored a career-high 17 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Anteaters in the nonconference road game Saturday.

Strings made five of nine three-point attempts in 21 minutes off the bench and three other ‘Eaters scored in double figures.

Senior Darren Moore had 15 points, senior Patrick Rembert added 12 and senior Pavol Losonsky chipped in 11 for the winners (3-3).

Rembert had four assists, four rebounds and two steals and Moore had four rebounds and four steals.

Sophomore guard Mike Wilder had eight points and a team-best nine rebounds, while Losonsky added six boards for UCI.

Senior Peter Simek tied a career-high with nine points for UCI, which visits the University of San Diego on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Los Angeles Pierce def. Orange Coast

WOODLAND HILLS — The visiting Pirates dropped a 25-14, 25-21, 25-13 decision in the Southern California Regional quarterfinals Saturday.

The loss ends the season for the defending state champions, who finish 16-6.

The Brahmas improve to 25-2.

UC Irvine def. Akron

IRVINE — Senior Juliane Piggott had 15 kills and 11 digs and freshman Shannon Fleming added a career-high 10 kills to help the host Anteaters post a 25-10, 25-23, 15-25, 25-19 nonconference triumph Saturday in the season finale at Crawford Court.

Freshman Mary Carls had a career-high 42 assists and sophomore Kristin Winkler had 16 digs for the winners (8-22).

Akron is 15-17.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, Pepperdine 7

STANFORD — Senior Brandon Johnson had three goals and his twin brother, senior Matt Johnson had nine saves to pace the Anteaters in the fifth-place semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Saturday at Stanford.

UCI (17-8) will meet UC Santa Barbara for fifth place today at 11:30 a.m.
