Ocean View Hawk Holiday Classic starts Monday

Sixteen teams start converging at the Ocean View High gym Monday for the start of the Ocean View Hawk Holiday Classic girls’ basketball tournament.

The event runs daily through Dec. 18 and features some of the top girls’ teams in Orange County.

Below are the opening round games for Monday and Tuesday:

3 p.m.: Westminster (3-1) vs. Dana Hills (1-1): Dana Hills finished runner-up last year to the tournament title. Westminster has won two-straight games.

4:20 p.m.: Long Beach Wilson vs. Mission Viejo

5:40 p.m.: University/Irvine vs. Whittier Christian: University has started its season 3-0, its most recent victory a 55-42 win over Marina Tuesday. Whittier Christian finished third in its own Leon Davis Classic and owns a 49-37 win Dec. 3 over Ocean View.

7 p.m.: Pacifica vs. Ocean View: A young Ocean View team, one that has three freshmen and two sophomores seeing plenty of playing time, went 1-3 last week at the Leon Davis Classic hosted by Whittier Christian.

8:30 p.m.: Western vs. La Serna

Tuesday

3 p.m.: Fountain Valley vs. JSerra: Fountain Valley, the other local team competing for the title, is wrapping up play this weekend at its own Hoops Challenge tournament. The Barons beat Costa Mesa, 63-44, in their tournament opener Tuesday but fell, 34-31, Wednesday to Tesoro. JSerra, which last year won the Hawk Holiday Classic title, was 2-1 heading into this week’s South Coast Holiday Classic.

4:20 p.m.: Rancho Alamitos vs. Bonita: Rancho, last year’s Garden Grove League champion, won three-straight games to open the season before losing in the championship game of the St. Anthony of Long Beach Tournament last Saturday. Dec. Bonita was 2-0 through today and currently is wrapping up play at the Covina Classic.

5:40 p.m.: Locke vs. Silverado

The tournament continues Wednesday and Dec. 17. It concludes with an eight-game schedule beginning at 9 a.m. Dec. 18. The championship game begins about 7:30 p.m.
